North County Update

Arlington: Christian school welcomes staff

Mel Mehrtens, a former principal at Arlington Christian School, has returned to the school after about 10 years to teach American history, government and current affairs.

Sandra Saddler-Seastone, a former kindergarten teacher at the school, has returned to teach in first and second grades.

Hugh Galbraith is a new addition to the faculty in the middle school program at the school.

Founded in 1975, Arlington Christian is a nondenominational school on a former dairy farm west of I-5 in the Smokey Point area.

Arlington: State settles on roundabout

State Department of Transportation engineers have decided that a roundabout is the best solution for improving safety and relieving congestion at the Highway 9 and Highway 531 intersection in Arlington.

Department officials heard from truck drivers, people who live nearby and business owners at an open house in July.

People offered their comments on the roundabout proposal and a proposed improved traffic signal.

“We really looked at the pros and cons of each option and found that the roundabout provides the greatest safety and congestion benefits for the longest period of time,” project manager Jason Koreski said in a press release.

Construction on the new $15.6 million roundabout is scheduled to begin in 2011.

Arlington: Learn about fall prevention

Stillaguamish Senior Center plans to host a health fair Wednesday that focuses on helping seniors prevent injuries caused by falling.

Emergency services personnel in Arlington say that about 73 percent of trauma-related calls are for injuries from falls taken by people age 62 and older.

The fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, 18308 Smokey Point Blvd.

Marysville: Sewer line on agenda

A proposal to replace 525 feet of sewer pipeline along the Sixth Street alley in downtown Marysville is among the agenda items for the City Council on Monday.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Marysville City Hall, 1049 State Ave.

If the council gives the go-ahead to the $101,150 project, crews would replace the aging sewer pipe with a PVC line.

Storm water improvements and repaving of the alleyway would be part of the work.

Marysville: Master gardeners share tips

Washington State University master gardeners plan to share their secrets in Marysville on Saturday.

The Growing Groceries Community Conference is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Marysville Middle School, 4923 67th St. NE.

The event is $10 for those who register, $15 at the door if space is available.

Topics include classes on food gardening; composting techniques; soil basics; making structures for vertical gardens, starting a community-school garden, and other subjects. Participants should bring a lunch.
