NFL Notebook: Broncos’ Moreno may get first start
Associated Press
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver running back Correll Buckhalter missed a third consecutive practice Friday because of an ankle injury.
It appears rookie Knowshon Moreno will start in his place Sunday when the Broncos host the New England Patriots.
Buckhalter, who sprained his left ankle last Sunday, leads the NFL with 7.2 yards per carry and leads the team with 267 yards rushing. But Moreno, who has shaken off a knee sprain that sidelined him for the final three weeks of the preseason, also has become a force in Denver’s fourth-ranked rushing attack.
While Buckhalter was listed as out on the team’s injury report, Coach Josh McDaniels declined to discuss his status or who would start in his place. He did say Moreno, the team’s top draft pick, was up to speed on every aspect of the playbook and prepared for whatever role he may play.
“There’s nothing he can’t do,” McDaniels said. “He’s totally ready to go with the whole game plan, and he’s fine, mentally and physically.”
Browns’ Jackson doubtful
BEREA, Ohio — Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson and kicker Phil Dawson missed practice and are doubtful for Sunday’s game in Buffalo. Jackson, the team’s leading tackler, has a hamstring injury that he sustained this week in practice. Dawson has been inactive for Cleveland’s past two games with a left calf injury and has not been seen around the team’s training facility.
Cotchery could miss game
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery missed practice Friday with a hamstring injury, and coach Rex Ryan said he could miss the game against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.
“That’s a possibility,” Ryan said. “I’m expecting him to play, but that’s a definite possibility.”
It was unclear which of Cotchery’s legs is affected. He was in sweat pants during practice and wasn’t in the locker room during media availability.
No word on Stafford’s status
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz has been mum on news about rookie quarterback Matt Stafford’s injured right knee and his status for Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh.
“I’ll announce a starting quarterback on Sunday,” Schwartz said. “There’s still a lot of time between now and the game, and we’ll have to see how things go.”
Stafford injured his knee in last weekend’s loss to Chicago, but neither he nor the team will confirm reports he sustained a dislocated kneecap that quickly returned into place.
Six players fined
NEW YORK — Six defensive players have been fined by the NFL. Tennessee defensive lineman Tony Brown drew a $10,000 fine for roughing the passer. He made helmet-to-helmet contact with Jaguars quarterback David Garrard. Fined $7,500 for the same offense was Dallas defensive tackle Jay Ratliff for hitting Denver’s Kyle Orton. The Patriots’ Mike Wright was fined $5,000 for hitting Ravens QB Joe Flacco. Baltimore DT Haloti Ngata was fined $5,000 for the same offense on Tom Brady. Also fined $7,500 was Bears DE Adewale Ogunleye for a horse-collar tackle against Detroit, and Lions cornerback Anthony Henry for the same violation in that game.
Pakulak to sub for Redskins
ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins will have a new punter Sunday. Coach Jim Zorn said Friday that Glenn Pakulak will be added to the active roster and will take over Hunter Smith’s duties as punter and holder for the game at Carolina. Smith pulled his groin in last week’s win over Tampa Bay and hasn’t been able to practice this week.
Steelers’ Polamalu not expected to play
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu practiced only lightly for the third day in a row and is not expected to play Sunday in Detroit. Polamalu, a five-time Pro Bowl player, has not played since tearing the medial collateral ligament in his left knee Sept. 10 against Tennessee. He was on the field Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but did not take part in a full practice.
