Margaret Rose was a foster parent to Dudley, a rescued dog, who died Oct. 5.

Sad to report the death of Dudley the dog.

I wrote about Dudley on Jan. 20, 2004, “Dudley the dog just wants to do right.”

The pooch, with deformed front legs, was fostered by Bob Wright and Margaret Rose of Lynnwood.

Rescued in California, Dudley had a hard life his first few years. What he needed was a quiet home with no other dogs.

Wright and Rose offered Dudley a temporary pad until he was adopted.

Little did they know they would fall hard for the crippled mutt.

He lived a good life with the couple for almost six years. They doted on the dog who may have been a mixture of basset hound, corgi, border collie and beagle.

Rose said a vitamin deficiency may have caused Dudley's front legs to wither. He died Oct. 5. His back deteriorated and he got to the point where he couldn't walk, Wright says.

The veterinarian said they could try cortisone injections, but Rose knew it was time for Dudley to be free of pain.

“He suffered for the first few years of his life,” she said. “My baby wasn't going to suffer at the end.”

As usual, there will be free Alka-Seltzer, Rolaids and Beano in Bothell.

Guests and their tummies will be well tended at the third annual Chilifest planned for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Washelli, 18224 103rd Ave. NE in Bothell.

Dale Amundsen, Washelli's community relations coordinator, says to expect 15 pots of chili prepared by chefs of the Greater Bothell Chamber of Commerce.

“This party will be a gas,” Amundsen says. “Chilifest is a way the funeral home and the chamber can raise donations for the Hopelink food bank in a delicious and fun way.”

Visitors are asked to bring food bank goods or cash. Each donation gets them a vote for the People's Choice Award.

“The winner gets some serious bragging rights and a prize donated by local jeweler Richard Olson.”

A panel of dignitaries will give awards in four categories including Mr. Meaty, Green Bean (vegetarian), Judges' Favorite and the coveted Burnt Spoon.

Casi McAllister, assistant manager at Spirit Halloween Store in Lynnwood, checks in with a sales report:

“We're selling lots of ghoulies that scare you when they are motion- or sound-activated,” McAllister says. “A huge thing this year is a bubble fogger.”

When the bubble bursts, fog poofs out.

Nationally known marionette performer Mary Shaver will perform “Cinderella and the Bug Brigade” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W.

Admission is free.

“She is a real crowd pleaser,” says Rosy Brewer, managing librarian. “People don't get to see full-blown marionette performances very much anymore.”

The last time Shaver performed at the library, she drew almost 100 people, Brewer added.
