October events at the Senior Center

There are several upcoming activities at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, 18560 First Ave. NE, Suite 1, in Shoreline. Among them:

Ÿ PROBUS Club, 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 20: Melanie Granfors from the Shoreline Fire Department brings Hunter, a therapy dog, as she and the Delta Society discuss the healing power of animals.

Ÿ “The library is more than books,” 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 26: Lake Forest Park Library staff discuss all the resources the library offers for free. Learn how to check your account, search for books, magazines, audio books, DVDs and music, and reserve items.

Ÿ “Helping seniors stay independent,” 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28: Learn about housing options, and how to prepare for a move with strategic downsizing. Class will be held in the Friends Meeting Room in Third Place Commons, 17171 Bothell Way NE.

Ÿ Annual Holiday Bazaar, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 6-7: Crafters, many returning from last year, display their wares. The event also includes a silent auction, quilt raffle, bake sale and rummage sale.


Richmond Beach haunted yard

Calling all friends, neighbors, ghosts and goblins! Once again it’s time to awaken the spirits locked in the Klein’s household for the Halloween season.

Come and enjoy our annual authentic haunted yard and help support our local food bank. This creepy, possessed exhibit will be on display from Oct. 28 to Oct. 31. Our address is 19818 19th Ave. NW.

Stop by for a neighborhood fright and enjoy a spooky Halloween tribute. We will be accepting donations of any nonperishable food items of your choice. All donations will go to the local Shoreline Food Bank.


Echo Lake neighbors meet

The October meeting of the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association will feature Shoreline City Manager Bob Olander as well as senior planner Paul Cohen. Olander will talk about city events, accomplishments and goals. Cohen will discuss Echo Lake’s part of the new Town Center.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Ballinger Room of the Shoreline Center’s south building, 18520 First Ave. NE.

YMCA offers free family day

The Dale Turner Family YMCA in partnership with the city of Shoreline is offering a free family day from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 17.

All visitors must bring photo identification.

Meanwhile, new members will pay no joining fees through Oct. 31. Families can save up to $125.

Wanted: Poetry submissions

Students in ninth to 12th grades and in college, up to age 21, are invited to submit poems for a Nov. 11 poetry event at Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park Towne Centre.

At the event, youth will read original poetry to an audience or recite poetry of established authors.

Commission hosts workshop

The city of Shoreline will host a short course on local planning from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 14 in Council Chambers, Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave. N.

The three-hour public workshop will cover the legal basis of planning in Washington state, explain the basics of comprehensive planning and plan implementation, discuss the role of the planning commission, the city council and city staff and how the public can be effectively involved in local planning.

The event is free.


Have your say on Town Center

The city plans a Town Center Open House from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in Council Chambers, Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave. N.

The open house is an opportunity for the city to hear thoughts on how many of the projected 5,000 new jobs and 5,000 new residents that Shoreline must accommodate in the next 20 years should be focused in Town Center.

Planning commissioners and city planners will present several graphic displays about existing conditions, upcoming projects, adopted city plans and strategies, and recent studies done by University of Washington classes.

Attendees will have many different means to express their ideas and opinions, including a new “pulse pad” electronic voting system.


Watch Alice shrink

Shorewood High School will perform “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” Nov. 13-14 and 19-21.

This production takes a novel approach to the beloved Lewis Carroll book, as characters act out favorite lines from the dialogue and narration. Alice shows her many sides as she encounters the familiar characters of Wonderland. Colorful costumes, new music, and Carroll’s clever language will appeal to all ages. The script is adapted from the original text by director Barb Lachman.

The 7:30 p.m. performances will be held in the Shorewood High School theater, 17300 Fremont Ave. N. in Shoreline. Tickets are available for $6 and $8 at SHS and at Beach House Greetings, 626 NW Richmond Beach Road, west of the QFC in Shoreline. Matinee performances for elementary school students will be the week of Nov. 16.


Richmond Beach Halloween carnival

Richmond Beach Community Association is hosting its 23rd annual Halloween carnival.

The carnival is from 2 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 31 at Syre Elementary School, 19545 12th Ave. NW, Shoreline.

Join us for this spooky fun event! The carnival features games, a cake walk, prizes, inflatable attractions, a haunted house, food and more.

Tickets for activities and food are 3 for $1. Children and parents are encouraged to wear costumes.
