I-1033 could do more harm than good

The Enterprise has been relatively quiet this election season – no endorsements of our local candidates, limited coverage of the races themselves.

But we’ve noticed a trend among our county line cities on the matter of I-1033: Many have either come out against it or have strongly recommended voters reject it.

I-1033 is Tim Eyman’s latest project. The initiative would “limit growth of certain state, county and city revenues to annual inflation and population growth ... Revenue collected about the limit would reduce property tax levies.”

Essentially, this would cap baseline government spending at 2009 levels. A bad idea at any time, it’s especially bad during a year when a recession and budget cuts have forced spending to drastic lows.

When the economy improves, city, county and state governments would be unable to increase spending on important things like education and health care – both of which faced cuts in funding this year.

No one likes taxes, but these taxes help pay for essential services. We encourage voters to think hard about the long-term effects of this initiative and vote “no” on I-1033.
