Seems Like Yesterday

50 YEARS AGO (1959)

Everett Sunset Associated Grandmothers Club No. 11 met in the Darigold Building on Sept. 28 for its monthly luncheon. Plans were made to organize a new club in Machias. The next meeting was Oct. 30 with Elva Evans and Nellie on the lunch committee.

Inspecting a portion of more than 500 feet of wire fencing installed at Monroe’s Lewis Street Park were Norman Wolf, John West and Lyle Earlywine of the Monroe Lions Club. The club had spent 150 man-hours on the fence that would make the park safer.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

Runners crowded the bridge on the north end of Marine View Drive during Stroh’s Run for Liberty yesterday in Everett. Despite chilly weather, some 1,600 people covered the 8 kilometers to raise money for renovation of the 96-year-old Statue of Liberty.

A front-page story in The Herald told of the demise of Route 66, a highway made famous in song, story and television. The road, now mostly replaced by several interstate highways, ran from Chicago to Santa Monica, Calif. A parade of antique cars in Williams, Ariz. marked the opening of 6 miles of Interstate 40.
