SEATTLE Members of Washington states congressional delegation are asking Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to re-examine the decision to move a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration base from Seattle to Newport, Ore.
In a letter sent to Locke on Tuesday, they say that moving NOAAs Pacific base for its ships to Oregon would take the vessels farther away from important research facilities. They note that NOAA has 11 research centers in Washington state, but just two in Oregon.
They also say that Newport is 150 miles from the nearest major airport in Portland, which would make it harder for scientists to reach the ships.
