Second lawsuit filed over voter petitions
OLYMPIA — Initiative promoter Tim Eyman is suing Secretary of State Sam Reed to block the public release of signed ballot-measure petitions.
It’s the second lawsuit this year seeking to keep initiative and referendum petitions secret. The sponsors of Referendum 71, which asks voters to decide on expanded partnerships for gay couples, have a hearing on their case in federal appeals court today.
Eyman’s new lawsuit seeks to block the release of petitions from 11 initiatives, claiming that the signers’ identities are protected by free speech rights. There’s a hearing today in Thurston County Superior Court.
Reed says lobbyist and political consultant Bryan Wahl of Mountlake Terrace has already paid more than $1,500 for copies of the records. He’s expected to pick them up next Monday.
