Political FYI: State’s official seal is off-limits to candidates

Snohomish County Superior Court judge candidate Rico Tessandore was notified last week that he isn’t allowed to use the state seal on any political materials.

Assistant Secretary of State Steve Excell said he sent out the notification after receiving a complaint that Tessandore was using the seal for political purposes, contrary to the law.

Excell said he found what appeared to be a look-alike seal on Tessandore’s Web site. Candidates can use the state flag, which contains the state seal, in its entirety but cannot use just the seal. Excell said he has sent out hundreds of these notices and the majority of people comply without any further action.
