M's UPDATE: Griffey has arthroscopic surgery on left knee

One issue concerning Ken Griffey Jr. was resolved Monday.

He had a bone spur removed from his left knee in a procedure that may have revealed the source of the pain he experienced this season.

Whether Griffey returns to the Seattle Mariners for another season remains unknown, although that could be determined in the next few weeks.

Griffey, 39, had a bone spur removed by Dr. Timothy Kremchek in an arthroscopic outpatient procedure in Cincinnati. Kremchek operated on the same knee last October when Griffey had torn cartilage and a torn meniscus repaired.

The bone spur was believed to have caused the pain, swelling and fluid in the knee this year, and Kremchek was hopeful that removing it could allow Griffey to move more freely. The Mariners said the normal recovery period from such a procedure is 4-6 weeks.

Griffey, who became baseball's biggest star with the Mariners from 1989-99 before they traded him to the Cincinnati Reds, signed a one-year contract on Feb. 21 that brought him back to the team.

He was a much-needed unifying presence in the clubhouse this season, although his production on the field was limited. He played 117 games and batted .214 with 19 home runs and 57 runs batted in, leading the team with 63 walks.

Griffey said after the last game of the season Oct. 4 that he would like to return in 2010, but that the ultimate decision depended on the wishes of his family and the Mariners. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik, in an August interview, said he hoped Griffey would return next year in some capacity but didn't specify whether it would be as a player.

Zduriencik said last week that he spoke with Griffey during the final homestand about next season. The two sides are expected to continue talks and Griffey's status for next season could be resolved in as little as the next few weeks.

Teams are urged by the commissioner's office not to make major announcements during the World Series. The Series begins Wednesday and, if it goes seven games, would run through Nov. 5.
