Shortstop prospect Carlos Triunfel, held back from the first couple of weeks in the Arizona Fall League while he strengthens his left leg, should join the Peoria Javelinas this week, Grifol said.
Triunfel suffered a broken leg in April and, while he came back to play 24 games at the end of the season with Class AA West Tennessee, has gotten some individual attention from the Mariners strength and training staff this month in Arizona.
Among the Mariners prospects playing for the Javelinas, outfielder Dustin Ackley was batting .300 (6-for-20), Joe Dunigan .240 with one homer and five RBI, and right-handed pitcher Anthony Varvaro was 1-0 with a 2.25 earned-run average in four innings of relief.
Reliever Phillippe Aumont had a 14.73 ERA after 32/3 innings, his inflated numbers mostly the product of a rough outing last Wednesday in Phoenix when the Desert Dogs popped him for four hits (two of them home runs) and five earned runs in 11/3 innings.
In the same game, left-handed starter Nick Hill gave up seven hits and eight earned runs in 31/3 innings to leave his ERA at 12.79 after two starts.
The Mariners certainly arent panicking over those numbers.
Everybodys getting hit around in that league, Grifol said. I saw a lot of ERAs above 6. The ground is hard and its a good place to hit. I talked to those guys and told them that as long as theyre working on the things they need to be working on holding runners on, fielding their positions and repeating their deliveries thats what we worry about.
