Key factors in Boeing's choice of Charleston

Some of the reasons Boeing chose its Charleston site for the second 787 line:

  • Lower costs: The average Machinist in South Carolina earns about $14, roughly half of what the average Everett Machinist makes. South Carolina's Legislature also passed $170 million in tax incentives Wednesday to land Boeing's second 787 line.

  • Labor stability: Charleston voted out its Machinists union in September. Although Machinists here say they offered a 10-year no-strike deal, Boeing said it was 7 to 8 years and a no-strike agreement alone was not enough.

What Charleston will get from Boeing:

  • 1,000 direct manufacturing and flight line jobs

  • Additional engineering, management and support positions at Boeing

  • 12,000 total direct and indirect jobs in S.C.

  • Charleston will assemble three 787s a month; Everett will make seven.
