Stillaguamish Senior Center knitters outfit those in need of warmth

To keep motivated about losing weight, members of TOPS Arlington No. 433, which meets once a week, decided to get together more often at the Stillaguamish Senior Center in Arlington.

The idea is a boon to the down and out.

“A few of us started bringing our knitting and crocheting,” Cathy Nairn said. “This eventually led to others at the senior center joining us to knit, etc. We decided to make things to donate and use up some of the tons of yarn we all accumulated.”

So was born the Monday Lunch Bunch.

They used their nimble fingers to knit and crochet small projects, to see how items would turn out.

“We had a wonderful time socializing and actually making some cool things.”

When they assembled all their projects, they had a huge stash. They put it into large bins for men, women and teens at homeless shelters.

“We had fun going through it all and were really surprised how much we had,” Nairn says. “Since fall has arrived full force, we needed to get these things out to the folks.”

The bins contained 92 scarves, 49 hats,15 pairs of gloves, three baby blankets, two shawls and a pair of slippers.

“We are very proud of ourselves,” Nairn says.

Hundreds of folks may prefer ham at Thanksgiving this year.

They devoured turkey Oct. 18 at the Utsalady Ladies Aid on Camano Island.

“It was a huge success,” says organizer Betty Peak. “We served 298 dinners.”

How brave are your children?

The Stanwood Community and Senior Center offers a haunted elevator at 7430 276th St. NW in Stanwood.

Get on at one floor, then travel to the lower level into a dungeon of darkness and goblins. Terry Riffle at the center says they don't recommend the creepy guided tour for anyone younger than 10.

Check your guts and shell out $5 from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday.

Don't be afraid of Captain Slow, but heed the message.

We hear he/she is riding at the Cycle Barn MotorSports Group Spooky Scoot.

It begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lynnwood Cycle Barn, 5711 188th St. SW, and ends at Smokey Point Cycle Barn at 3131 Smokey Point Drive in Arlington.

Donate some canned food and decorate yourself or your bike or both, said Dave Preston with Cycle Barn.

They hope to start an annual parade tradition between Lynnwood and Smokey Point, with a Halloween family theme.

Captain Slow will lead this year's tour wearing an outfit adorned with neon yellow tennis balls.
