In anticipation of Halloween, The Herald asked 19 third-graders for advice on how to make a scary face. “You might want to ask your dad,” suggested Drew Polly. Emily Carl said the trick is in the eyes. “You roll your eyes so you can only see the white parts and then you just open your mouth just a little bit,” she said, before providing a convincing demonstration. “You growl,” offered Jada Christiansen. Xaphya Carden-Madden said the key is “trying a guy face and you roar.” “You just do a face that is not silly or goofy,” said Aaron Eastman before contradicting his own advice. Truth be told, the young students were heavy on effort but light on fright. Smiles routinely crept into zombie stares and vampire veneers, exposing the missing front teeth and innocence of 8-year-olds. Besides, being scary isn't always everything it's cracked up to be. Tarawa Bertino has decided she will be a queen this Halloween. “I wanted to be a zombie,” she said. “Then I realized it was a boy costume.” READER COMMENTS Be the first to comment.
