Silvertips win third straight

Simpson stops 37 shots as Everett beats Oil Kings 2-1 in shootout

EDMONTON, Alberta — Thomas Heemskerk set the bar Saturday night.

Kent Simpson followed suit Sunday afternoon.

The Everett Silvertips received another stellar goaltending performance, this time from Simpson, and the Tips defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 2-1 in a shootout to keep their long road trip rolling.

Simpson stopped 37 shots, then turned away all three Edmonton attempts in the shootout as the Tips (9-4-0-0) won their third straight game to start off their six-game swing through the WHL’s Central Division.

This came 16 hours after Heemskerk was spectacular in shutting out Red Deer in a 3-0 Everett victory the previous night. Through three games on the road trip Everett’s goaltenders have combined to allow just two goals on 109 shots.

Kellan Tochkin scored both the regulation goal and the shootout winner for Everett.

Michael St. Croix scored for Edmonton (7-10-0-2). Oil Kings goaltender Cam Lanigan also had a strong game, making 38 saves.

Despite the quick turnaround from the previous night, Everett came out strong in the first period and took a 1-0 lead 9 minutes, 29 seconds into the game. Lanigan spilled Radko Gudas’ shot from the point, and although he saved Tyler Maxwell’s rebound attempt, Tochkin put in the second rebound to give the Tips the lead.

Everett continued to be the better team, but the Tips weren’t able to convert on chances in close, and Edmonton tied it up late in the second period. Mark Pysyk’s shot from the point was tipped past Simpson by St. Croix at 18:01, making it 1-1.

The game opened up in the third period, with the action racing furiously from end to end. Both teams had several good scoring opportunities, but both netminders came up big.

The biggest save came when Simpson stopped Logan Proulx on a breakaway, the second time during the game Simpson stoned Proulx when in free.

After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout. Tochkin made a great move around Lanigan to put the Tips ahead. Meanwhile, Edmonton’s shooters fired wide as Everett won the shootout 1-0.
