GOLF ROUNDUP: Everett's Koppenberg falls short at Q-School
Herald staff
HOLLISTER, Calif. — Jake Koppenberg of Everett failed in his bid to advance at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament on Friday, finishing the four-round event with a 3-over-par total of 291 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.
Koppenberg, a 2005 graduate of Everett High School and a 2009 All-American at Western Washington University, needed to place in the top 23 plus ties, which required a 2-under 286 total, to move on to the Q-School's second stage. He ended up tied for 41st.
“I didn't feel like I played that bad,” he said. “But you have to be on your game to make it through those stages, and I just wasn't.”
Koppenberg was done in by a first round of 5-over 77. He began that round with a birdie, but then played the remaining holes with six bogeys and 11 pars, including consecutive bogeys on the final three holes.
“I went from 2 over to 5 over on the last three holes, and that really put me behind the 8-ball,” he said. “I tried to battle back (the next three days), but it just didn't happen. Definitely, the first day put me in a hole.”
Koppenberg was solid over the next three rounds, shooting 71, 73 and 70 over the par-72 course.
Now he expects to try to qualify for the Canadian Professional Golf Tour in March, and between now and then he will continue practicing.
“Going into Q-School,” he said, “it's not a sure thing. It's a tough road, and even the best players struggle getting through. I didn't want it to happen this way, but I'd prepared myself that there was a good chance I wouldn't make it all the way through. So I'll try again next year, and in the meantime I'll keep working on my game.”
Two players from Washington finished in the top 23 at San Juan Oaks GC, one of 13 first-stage qualifying sites around the country. Zach Bixler of Richland tied for ninth at 7-under 281 and Christopher Griffin of Puyallup tied for 19th at 3-under 285.
World Match Play
CASARES, Spain — Ross Fisher rallied from a three-hole deficit to draw even with Masters champion Angel Cabrera halfway through the World Match Play Championship semifinals on Saturday, while Anthony Kim and Robert Allenby were also all-square after 18 holes.
Fisher's birdie at the last hole capped a back-nine turnaround, with the Argentine having been 3-up after 13 holes in near perfect conditions at the Finca Cortesin golf course.
Champions Schwab Cup
SONOMA, Calif. — John Cook shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday to take a six-stroke lead in the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Cook, who shot a tournament-record 62 on Friday, had a 19-under 197 total on the Sonoma Golf Club course, the best three-round score in a 72-hole tournament on the senior circuit since Jack Nicklaus also had a 197 total in the 1990 Senior Players Championship.
LPGA Tour
INCHEON, South Korea — Na Yeon Choi of South Korea shot a 71 and Taiwan's Yani Tseng had a 70 to share the lead at 5-under par after a wet and windy second round of the LPGA Tour's KOLON Championship on Saturday.
Singapore Open
SINGAPORE — Ian Poulter was 4 over through six holes Saturday in the third round of the Singapore Open, dropping the Englishman into a tie for the Singapore Open lead with France's Thomas Levet and Japan's Kodai Ichihara.
Viking Classic
MADISON, Miss. — PGA Tour officials canceled the weather-stricken Viking Classic because of unplayable course conditions.
There will be no makeup date and players will move on to the final event of the season, the Children's Miracle Network Classic on Nov. 12-15 in Florida.
