Locker "questionable" for Saturday's game
SEATTLE -- The bye week might not have provided enough rest to bring Jake Locker back.
The University of Washington quarterback is still struggling with a deep thigh bruise, and coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday that Locker is "questionable" for Saturday's game at UCLA.
"We'll be smart with how we're monitoring the (practice) reps that he gets" this week, Sarkisian said, "but also we need to give him enough to where we can assess him physically."
Sarkisian added that Locker was limited during a Sunday night practice that was closed to the media. As far as the quarterback's workload for the rest of this week, Sarkisian called him "day-to-day."
Locker suffered the injury during the first quarter of the Oct. 24 loss to Oregon, and it was initially brushed off as a minor quadriceps bruise. But Locker continued to experience swelling and pain, so his status this week is still up in the air.
Locker said Monday that "I expect to be out there" against the Bruins on Saturday, but Sarkisian pointed out that it will not be the quarterback's call.
"We're not going to force him back on the field if he's not healthy and ready to go," Sarkisian said. "We anticipate that he will be, but he remains day-to-day. ... I don't want to put a guy out there who can't move, who's a sitting target to get hit."
Locker hasn't missed a game this season after being plagued by injuries in 2007 and 2008.
If Locker can't play, sophomore Ronnie Fouch would start, with true freshman Keith Price serving as the backup.
