Prep roundup: Meadowdale advances to 3A district volleyball championship

Mavericks face Everett Saturday in 3A district volleyball championship

EVERETT — After winning it’s first two games, the Meadowdale volleyball team finds itself in the 3A District 1 championship with a chance to clinch a state berth this weekend.

The Mavericks passed their first test, by coming from behind to defeat Glacier Peak 3-1 (25-27, 25-11, 25-13, 25-15). Lindsey Milner had 10 kills and 24 digs, Payton Shrum had 25 digs and Megan Nelson had 36 assists, 12 digs and four aces to lead Meadowdale in its first match of the night.

Meadowdale then took on Mount Vernon, which had defeated Shorecrest 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 15-6) earlier in the night. Milner had 12 kills and Alexa Cannon added 10 kills to seal the Mavericks’ second win of the night, 25-14, 25-12, 25-13.

Meadowdale (11-5 overall) plays Everett Saturday in the district championship at noon at Cascade High School with the winner securing a state berth. The loser will play in another game with the winner clinching the second seed to state from District 1.

In other volleyball action, Glacier Peak and Shorecrest, which both fell in their opening matches, played with the Scots prevailing 3-0 with game scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-8. Shorecrest (8-8) will play Lynnwood in a loser-out game Thursday at 7 p.m. at Shorecrest High School.

The Grizzlies (3-13) were eliminated from the tournament.

3A District 1 playoffs: At Ferndale, in a match that was a lot closer than the score might indicate, Everett defeated Lynnwood by scores of 25-16, 26-24, 26-24 to clinch a spot in the 3A District 1 tournament title game.

The Seagulls (10-6 overall) took on Lynnwood after defeating Sedro-Woolley 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-16) in the first round. Everett faces Meadowdale in the championship with a spot in the state tournament on the line. The loser faces whoever comes out of the consolation bracket to try to earn the second berth.

Lynnwood (9-6) earned its duel with Everett by first defeating Ferndale in a five-game match. After dropping the first two games 19-25, 21-25, the Royals came back and closed out the match 25-20, 25-20, 15-12 to earn the victory and continue play in the tournament. Lynnwood will face Shorecrest Thursday at Shorecrest High School in the consolation bracket.

Mountlake Terrace 3, Cascade 1: At Mountlake Terrace, Mountlake Terrace defeated Cascade 25-15, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16 in the 4A District 1 play-in game, advancing the Hawks (6-9 overall) to the district tournament where they will take on Monroe Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Chelsea Nelson had 15 assists and Kaitie Brush, Kayleigh Shaw and Becca Holtgeerts each had five kills apiece for Cascade (3-11).
