Catcher Johnson resting after second hip surgery

Posted at 1:30 pm by By Kirby Arnold

Made a call to Mariners catcher Rob Johnson this afternoon to see if he's still feeling great after surgery Oct. 16 to repair the labrum in his right hip, and whether he's gearing up to have the left hip (similar injury) done soon. Johnson's wife, Kristan, answered. And for good reason.

Rob had his left hip operated on Tuesday, three days earlier than originally planned. Johnson had surgery on Oct. 16 in Aspen, Colo., and the plan was for him to gain strength in the right hip and return for surgery on his left hip three weeks later. Nov. 7 was the target date, although Johnson obviously beat that.

Kristan Johnson said the second surgery went well and that Rob was resting this afternoon in Vail.

He still has a December operation planned in Seattle to fix an injury to his left wrist.

Dr. Marc Phillippon, who performed a similar hip surgery on Alex Rodriguez last winter, operated on Johnson's hips.

Doctors have told Johnson that he should recover from the surgeries before spring training begins in mid-February, although the Mariners plan to be cautious with him early in camp.

Spring Training and Beyond - Blog
Kriby - you have mentioned several times that you would like to see the blog take off - as in more participants. Me too, although being one of just a few makes this process very personal for me. However, I know the younger crowd likes pictures and animation. I was wondering, starting next spring perhaps there would be a way for anyone posting on the Hearld Net to include say up to six photos of games with their post. I do this sometimes on Trip Advisor.com (so it is possible on a blog site) and it gets a lot of interest. You could get some great photos of games and the park without needing a camera man and it seems young folks like photos (as in Facebook). Hope this helps!

Johnson and Moore
My best wishes to Johnson's speedy recovery! Get well soon! I look foward to Johnson and Moore working as Marnier catchers next year. The nice thing about both is their experience working wiht Marnier pitchers who were in Tacoma, like RRS, Fister, French, Vargas, Morrow, and Jakubauskas. Both these guys have talent with pitchers and seem so much more capable than Clement ever was. NOW, they just need to hit! We need some bats on this team!
