Mill Creek Council may be rough

Former Mill Creek Mayor Pam Pruitt expects the Mill Creek City Council to be a difficult place to work over the coming months.

That’s because of the aftermath of the just completed election.

Councilman Terry Ryan and Councilwoman Mary Kay Voss, who have fought a difficult campaign, still will be on the council together for the last two months of the year.

Pruitt says that if Ryan has won, Councilwoman Donna Michelson, who ran unopposed, will be in a difficult position both before and after new council members take office. Pruitt tells me that Michelson’s strong support for Voss may force her to mend fences with Ryan, a former council ally.

The money mounts

The money kept rolling in before Tuesday’s election.

As of Monday, candidates for three Edmonds City Council positions had raised $122,814 and spent $111,637.

That’s $2.76 raised and $2.73 spent for every man, woman and child in Edmonds, and it’s $8.46 raised and $7.70 spent for everyone who voted in the last city election.

The contest between Edmonds City Councilman Michael Plunkett and challenger Priya Cloutier continued to be the most expensive in South Snohomish County. As of Monday, Plunkett had raised $33,074 and spent $32,229. Cloutier had raised $27,393 and spent $26,714.

If Jim Smith wins, who takes his seat?

If Lynnwood Councilman Jim Smith beats Gough, it would create a vacancy for Smith’s council seat.

One possible candidate is Lisa Utter, who gave up her seat for an unsuccessful primary bid for mayor.

When asked if she would be interested in the vacancy, Utter declined to answer.

Evan Smith can be reached at schsmith@verizon.net.
