Edmonds-Woodway won its second straight game for the first time this season.
Senior running back Jimmy Spears rushed for 100 yards on 14 carries and scored a touchdown to lead the Warriors to 40-6 romp over Shorewood in a Western Conference 4A South Division football game Oct. 30 at Shoreline Stadium.
Coupled with last week’s win over Cascade, Edmonds-Woodway improved to 3-3 in the league and 4-5 overall.
The wet weather forced Edmonds-Woodway to focus on its ground game and the offensive line responded well. Running back Gus Carstens finished with 103 yards on four carries and one 80-yard touchdown run to close out the game late in the fourth quarter.
“Our defense did an excellent job of shutting them down,” said Edmonds-Woodway coach John Gradwohl. “I felt we had great field position.”
Senior quarterback Andy Willcock, who threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Grant Arnold in the first quarter, twisted his ankle and was replaced by Sam Storino in the second quarter. Storino scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Zack Berg had a 5-yard touchdown run. Kicker Dan DuBois booted field goal of 27 and 33 yards.
Edmonds-Woodway wraps up the season by hosting Oak Harbor at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5 at Edmonds Stadium.
“We beat Cascade and beat Shorewood. I hope we go out on a positive note and have something to build on” Gradwohl said. “I think we’re playing pretty well.”
The Warriors had high expectations this season but came in with really only three returning varsity starters.
“It took a while to get guys in the right positions,” Gradwohl said. “I’d love to go back and play a couple of those games.”
Edmonds-Woodway will return seven players on offense and seven on defense next season.
