Upset for Arlington council; Stanwood re-elects mayor

ARLINGTON — Former Arlington School District superintendent Linda Byrnes appears headed for an upset over incumbent Councilman Graham Smith in the race for the at-large seat on the Arlington City Council.

On Tuesday, Byrnes received 1,248 votes, 59 percent, to Smith's 854 votes, 41 percent.

Smith, who was not available for comment, is finishing his sixth year on the council.

Byrnes, who was superintendent of schools for 12 years, said she was initially upset that her share of the votes was only 59 percent.

“Then I realized I was looking for the 60 percent required to pass a school levy,” Byrnes said, laughing. “There are plenty of votes still to be counted, but I feel pretty comfortable with the preliminary count. I love this community, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with Mayor Margaret Larson.”

In the city council Position 3 race, incumbent Councilman Scott Solla garnered 70 percent, or 1,407 votes, to challenger Brock Hecla's 30 percent, or 598 votes.

Stanwood

In Stanwood, incumbent Mayor Dianne White appears headed for re-election.

She took 576 votes, or 62 percent, to challenger Timothy Loney's 347, or 38 percent of the vote.

Loney, a city councilman since 2007, said he ran against the mayor because he doesn't like uncontested races.

White, who is completing her first term as mayor, previously served on the planning commission and city council.

“I have to hand it to Tim,” she said. “He ran to make me be a better mayor. It certainly doesn't hurt to have competition. We have a lot of work to do now. We're the little engine that could up here in Stanwood, and I plan to work just as hard as during the next four years.”

On Tuesday, Stanwood Planning Commissioner Timothy Pearce was leading former downtown business owner Gerald “JJ” Steik in the race for the city council Position 2 seat by 70 percent, or 581 votes, to Steik's 242, or 30 percent of the votes.
