’Canes snap Silvertips’ 4-game win streak

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta — There will be no perfect road trip for the Everett Silvertips.

Everett suffered its first defeat on its longest road trip of the season, falling 3-2 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

Everett won its first four games during its six-game swing through the WHL’s Central Division. However, playing their fourth game in five days, the Tips never found the necessary jump to overcome the Hurricanes.

Mitch Maxwell scored twice to lead Lethbridge (6-11-2-0). Austin Fyten also scored for the Hurricanes and Brandon Anderson picked up his first WHL victory in goal, making 22 saves.

Byron Froese and Chris Langkow scored for Everett (10-5-0-0). Kent Simpson stopped 23 shots in net for the Tips. The three goals allowed equaled the total Everett surrendered in the first four games of the road trip combined.

Everett’s trip concludes Friday against Calgary.

There were no goals and few scoring opportunities during the first period. The teams combined for just 11 shots on goal as neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm.

The game came alive with the teams trading goals 62 seconds apart early in second period. Lethbridge opened the scoring at 5 minutes, 56 seconds just after an Everett penalty expired, Fyten getting free in the slot and sneaking a shot past Simpson. Then Froese replied at 6:58, crossing the blue line and beating Anderson with a long wrist shot.

The Hurricanes restored their lead at 14:57. Carter Ashton raced into the offensive zone and was taken down, but Maxwell skated onto the loose puck and made a move to beat Simpson and make it

Lethbridge scored the all-important insurance goal 2:39 into the third period. The Hurricanes pressured the Everett goal, and although Simpson saved the first to attempts, Maxwell was able to put it in on the third to make it 3-1.

Everett gave itself a chance with 6:39 remaining, good work down low by Shane Harper and Kellan Tochkin setting up Langkow to score from close range and cut the deficit to one. However, the Tips were unable to threaten again.
