Tips win fourth game in a row

MEDICINE HAT, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips just keep rolling along on their longest road trip of the season.

Everett remained undefeated on their trip through the WHL’s Central Division after beating the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-1 Tuesday night. The Tips are 4-0 on the trip with two games remaining.

The Tips played a solid road game, slowing down the potent Medicine Hat attack with tight checking, and Everett received more strong goaltending. Thomas Heemskerk made 25 saves, doing his best work during the decisive third period.

It was the fourth straight strong performance in net by Everett’s goaltenders (Heemskerk and Kent Simpson) as they’ve stopped 132 of the 135 shots they’ve seen during the trip.

Shane Harper, Byron Froese and Scott MacDonald scored the goals for Everett (10-4-0-0). For MacDonald, who was called up last week, it was his first as a Tip.

Bretton Cameron scored the lone tally for Medicine Hat (9-7-2-2). Tyler Bunz stopped 16 shots in net for the Tigers.

The score was 1-1 going into the third period when Everett found the key breakthrough early in the period. Kellan Tochkin won a battle behind the Medicine Hat net and whipped a pass out front, where Froese snapped a shot past Bunz from the slot to break the tie at 2:20.

Heemskerk then made several good saves before the Tips put it away late. At 15:17 Chris de la Lande’s shot from the point was tipped past Bunz by MacDonald to five Everett the all-important two-goal lead.

Everett opened the scoring just 2 minutes, 44 seconds into the game. Good work behind the Medicine Hat net by Chris Langkow and MacDonald set up Harper to bang it in from close range and make it 1-0.

Medicine Hat tied it up at 11:03. Jace Coyle’s slap shot from the point was deflected past Heemskerk by Cameron, making it 1-0.

Neither team scored during a tight-checking second period. Everett did a good job killing penalties during the period, including a Medicine Hat five-on-three, and the Tips received a late let off when Matt Konan’s shot from the point drew iron.
