Archbishop Murphy girls soccer team makes the most of its opportunities
By Aaron Lommers Herald Writer
DUVALL — The Archbishop Murphy girls soccer team knows how to take advantage of opportunities.
After all, they are undefeated.
Tuesday against Cedarcrest, the Wildcats capitalized on a few more opportunities with a 2-0 victory in a 2A District 1 semifinal playoff game and, just like last year, earned a spot in the 2A District 1 championship contest and a trip to the 2A state playoffs.
But you wouldn’t know it by watching the girls after the game.
“Somebody said ‘We’re going to state now’ and I said ‘Oh yeah, I guess we are,’” Archbishop Murphy coach Dick Henderson said.
For a team that has placed third at state the past two years and just wrapped up an undefeated regular season, it’s easy to forgive the Wildcats for not being too excited.
“It wasn’t the goal,” Henderson said. “We have one more game here and we still have more work to do.”
The Red Wolves proved early that they weren’t going to make things easy on perennial power Archbishop Murphy. Cedarcrest attacked and sophomores Gwen Bieck and Maggie Pleis both had looks at the goal, but Archbishop Murphy goalkeeper Alexa Hughes, who has given up only one goal all season, stopped any and all challenges.
“Pleis and Bieck are far and away their two best players,” Henderson said.
On the other end of the field, it was Cedarcrest goalkeeper Kori Butterfield who was keeping the Red Wolves in the game. Any ball, and there weren’t too many that got past Cedarcrests’ defenders, Butterfield would stop — until the 26th minute.
The Wildcats challenged the Cedarcrest defenders, but this time the Red Wolves failed to clear the ball. Junior Caroline Brawner (Tasha Pabisz assist) took advantage of the chance, rocketing a shot from about 15 yards out past Butterfield into the left side of the goal.
Cedarcrest had two very legitimate chances to score in the second half, the first coming early on when Pleis took a pass out of the air booting it from about 10 yards out at the left corner of the goal, but Hughes was there.
Late in the half Cedarcrest probably had its best chance to score all game when Ashton Griffen played a cross to Bieck in front of the goal with Hughes charging, Bieck tried to get a shot off, but it was deflected out of bounds by Hughes for a corner kick. The corner kick was cleared and the danger was over for the Wildcats (18-0-0).
“When it was 1-0 we were just one big play on their part away from being tied,” Henderson said.
Just a few minutes later, with Cedarcrest (11-6-1) still desperately trying to get the equalizer, Archbishop Murphy’s Sam Pettinger took care of that.
Much like the Wildcats’ first goal, the ball was in the penalty box and Cedarcrest was unable to clear it. Pettinger, who was behind Lindsey Bos, took Bos’ short pass back and buried it in the back of the net.
The 74th minute goal essentially ended any Cedarcrest threat.
“The second goal takes a lot out of a team,” Henderson said.
For Cedarcrest, not being able to clear the ball on the two Wildcat goals made all the difference.
“They couldn’t keep clearing it, the second or third chance they couldn’t clear,” Henderson said.
Archbishop Murphy plays Sehome at Cedarcrest H.S. at 3 p.m Saturday for the 2A District 1 championship.
Cedarcrest will play the winner of Thursday’s Granite Falls vs. Bellingham game in a winner-to-state/loser out game on Saturday at Cedarcrest H.S. at 1 p.m.
Sehome 1, Lakewood 0: Sehome (17-1 overall) broke a scoreless tie in the 60th minute when Jessica Bertucci had a breakaway and crossed to her left to find Madison Heilmann, who shot past Miranda Head for the game’s only goal. Rachel Albert was the goalkeeper for Sehome. Sehome advanced to the 2A District 1 championship game at Cedarcrest H.S. on Saturday to face Archbishop Murphy at 3 p.m. Lakewood (13-5) plays the winner of Thursday’s Squalicum vs. Burlington-Edison game on Saturday, also at Cedarcrest H.S., in a winner-to-state/loser out game at 11 a.m.
