Everett police officer pleads not guilty in fatal shooting

EVERETT – The Everett police officer accused of fatally shooting an intoxicated Stanwood man in June made his first court appearance today.

Troy Meade, 41, pleaded not guilty to first-degree manslaughter this afternoon in Snohomish County Superior Court. He remains free on his own personal recognizance. Prosecutors don't consider Meade a flight risk.

Superior Court Judge Eric Lucas ordered Meade to stay in the state unless he gets approval from the court to leave. He also is not allowed to possess any weapons, including firearms.

Meade nodded his head and smiled at more than a dozen Everett police officers who showed up for this afternoon’s hearing. More than a dozen Everett police officers, all out of uniform, came to support Meade, his attorney David Allen said.

“He his heartened by the support from his fellow police officers,” the Seattle attorney said.

Meade was charged last week after a four-month investigation into the shooting death of Niles Meservey, 51, outside the Chuckwagon Inn, 6720 Evergreen Way. Authorities decided that Meade wasn't justified in shooting Meservey and accused the 11-year police veteran of recklessly causing the Stanwood man's death.

Meade has declined to provide investigators a statement about the incident. Allen said he expects the officer will win acquittal at trial.

The officer was charged after a special team of homicide detectives investigated the case. The Snohomish County Multiple Response Team interviewed more than a dozen witnesses, took hundreds of pictures, inspected three vehicles and used computers to reconstruct the crash and shooting.

Investigators believe Meade was attempting to prevent Meservey, who was drunk, from driving off in his Corvette. The car was parked outside the Chuckwagon restaurant where Meservey had been drinking that night.

Patrons twice called police to report that Meservey was intoxicated and attempting to drive. Police who first arrived at the scene didn't find Meservey in the area. Investigators believe he was drinking at another nearby tavern.

Meade responded to a second call and found Meservey sitting inside the Corvette.

A second Everett police officer, Steve Klocker, also arrived at the scene. He told investigators Meade was trying to get Meservey to get out of the car. Meade fired his electric stun gun at Meservey through the driver's window and shocked the man twice. Meservey quickly recovered and started up his car and rammed into a chain-link fence.

Klocker told investigators Meade then took a big step backward and opened fire. Meservey was struck seven times. He died at the scene.

Klocker first told detectives he remembered Meade said something like, “Time to end this; enough is enough,” just before the shooting. The officer said he believed Meade was speaking to him — not the driver — before he opened fire.

Klocker also told investigators that immediately after the shooting, Meade said he believed their lives were in danger.

TIME TO END THIS,
Even if this is manslaughter, which we all know full well murder in 1st degree fits this crime. Why is the other officer not charged as well? Was he not with shooter? Was he not engaged in yelling with Meade also at man in vette? Was he not at scene of this murder? Why has he not been charged?

So Smart Team, EPD, Mr. Roe, you all decided that even if you are with someone who killed someone they are not guilty of any crime, including murder or manslaughter?

So lets just say someone drove that nut that shot SP Officer, driver did not know it was going to happen, and he walked away and stepped back from the issue, ran more like it, driver should not be charged FOR MURDER OR MANSLAUGHTER at all according to you all.

He did not kill anyone, so he goes free. Just like the officer who was with MEADE who shot and killed a citizen.

Does this mean now if you happen to be with someone who commits a crime, and you did somewhat participate up to the point someone was killed, your not guilty of murder/manslaughter?

New law? Or are you changing law? Is this law for everyone, or just Police? Please advise..

Explain this...

EXPLAIN, show case law were this applies.

I am sure there is people in prison who would like your answer so they can use it to get out of jail because they were with someone who killed another person.

TIME TO END THIS!

I have to agree he's guilty as hell. since he shot the guy 7 times and all he did was run into a fence. yeah the guy was drunk but that's doesnt mean you can kill a person for being drunk in their car if they haven't left the parking lot and aren't harassing cops. this is the 2nd time this officer has killed someone that didn't need to be killed. he needs to go jail.

"Meade has declined to provide investigators a statement about the incident."
"Meade has declined to provide investigators a statement about the incident."

Because he knows that he murdered Niles in cold blood! Shot an unarmed man in the back like the lowest, yellowest coward that has ever slithered on the face of the earth!

Then he immediately starts screaming for his rights, "I want my garrity" Knowing that he committed murder!

They are trying to say that Niles started the car after being tasered and that is a lie! The car was already started and when he was tasered then the car lurched forward as a result of so many thousands of volts of electricity going through his body!

They have to tell that lie because its there only hope but its a blatant out and out lie to try and make Niles look as if he was attempting to flee when that isnt the case at all... They should be charged with giving false statements when it comes out that they are in fact not being truthful...

This was cold blooded, heartless murder, no more no less... What kind of a yellow coward shoots an unarmed defenseless man in the back???

"Good Ole' Boys Club" Shows Support In Court!
The Snohomish County Law Enforcement "Good Ole' Boys Club" that supports deadly force at the slightest perceived provocation showed up in court today to support one of their own... And there was Troy Meade all smiles and giggles, nothing but a big joke to him after being on paid vacation with his family, not a care in the world... They know if they are involved in a shooting that they get a paid vacation and then they are investigated by there own so very rarely does it even reach this point... And you can bet that he will not be held accountable for his actions...

I bet the city settles the case out of court so that Paul Luvera doesnt get a chance to expose their little club... Troy Meade should be in jail, he is a danger to the community and he has already shown that he is unstable with his actions. Laughing and giggling in court just really shows you how seriously that they are taking this case. If there was not so much public outcry from the beginning from people like me charges would have never been filed, just look at all the other police involved deadly shootings and you see that none of them have ever been found unjustified and the law of averages says that it is not mathematically possible and therefore it is obvious that some of those cases have just been swept under the rug...

Troy Meade - The courtroom where are are charged with unjustifiably taking another humans life is not the place for you to be laughing and joking around with your other Snohomish county law officers that are members of the "Good Ole' Boys Club"... Have some respect for the Meservey family for once... Even if you do have to fake it...
