More snow expected at mountain passes
More than a foot of snow has fallen in the Cascades and at the mountain passes over the last 24 hours, and forecasters say more is to come.
The National Weather Service in Seattle today issued a winter weather advisory for the western slopes of the northern and central Cascades and the mountain passes.
The warning was expected to remain in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday, said Johnny Berg, a meteorologist with the weather service.
By Sunday morning, high elevations likely will see between 3 and 9 inches of snow.
Rain showers with light hail is expected in parts of Snohomish County this evening as a storm moves northwest of Paine Field toward Arlington, Berg said. He predicted the showers will begin to taper off on Sunday morning, but the break in the weather likely won’t linger past Sunday night.
Avalanche danger this afternoon caused state transportation crews to close the N. Cascades Highway from milepost 132 to milepost 171, according to the state Department of Transportation Web site. That portion of Highway 20 was expected to remain closed until noon Monday.
