Silvertips lose 3-2 in OT

CALGARY, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips finished off their longest road trip of the season with a strong effort Friday night. Unfortunately, for the Tips, it was only good enough to earn a single point.

Joel Broda scored a power-play goal 57 seconds into overtime, and the Calgary Hitmen defeated the Tips 3-2 in a hard-fought contest.

Michael Stone and Austin Madaisky scored in regulation for Calgary (15-5-0-0), while Martin Jones picked up the win in goal for the Hitmen with 25 saves.

Chris Langkow and Tyler Maxwell tallied for Everett (10-5-1-0), which completed its six-game swing through the Central Division 4-1-1-0. Thomas Heemskerk made 30 saves in goal for the Tips.

Everett wrapped up its swing through the Central with its toughest test, taking on a Hitmen team leading its division and ranked third in the entire Canadian Hockey League. After being outplayed in the first period and falling behind 2-1, the Tips picked up the pace in the final two periods, tying it up and matching the Hitmen chance for chance. Everett got the game into overtime to secure at least a point.

But when Rasmus Rissanen took a tripping penalty 28 seconds into overtime Everett’s fate was sealed. Calgary’s power play, the top-ranked unit in the league, was given a chance four-on-three and made no mistake, Brandon Kozun arcing around the perimeter and feeding Broda on the back door, ending the game 57 seconds into the extra period.

Calgary’s potent power play also opened the scoring 9:48 into the game. Everett came into the game having yet to surrender a power-play goal during the road trip. However, Kozun turned in the left corner and fired a pass to the back door, where Stone put it past a stranded Heemskerk to make it 1-0.

Everett knotted it back up at 13:03, Langkow with a nice tip of a Chris de la Lande shot from the point making it 1-1.

Calgary reclaimed the lead 1:26 later on a similar play, Madaisky’s shot from the point deflecting off de la Lande in front and past Heemskerk to make it 2-1.

Everett tied it again at 19:12 of the second period. Just after a Tips power play expired, a slap pass from Byron Froese found Maxwell all alone at the post, and Maxwell gathered and scored to make it 2-2.

Both teams had chances to win it in regulation, and the Tips received a let-off when Calgary’s Cody Beach rang the post with a shot late in the third.
