    Shorewood tops 4A district meet

MARYSVILLE — As it has done all season, Shorewood’s girls swimming team used a bevy of skilled swimmers to cruise to the 4A District 1 swimming championship Saturday afternoon at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

The Thunderbirds toppled three school records, including an improbable first-place finish in the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 53.65 seconds, en route to earning 479 points and its first 4A District 1 championship.

“I thought I was going to die after that medley relay,” said Shorewood head coach Susie McDowell, who is in her 13th season as coach. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Shorewood entered the medley relay with the third fastest time in the preliminary rounds (1:57:18), behind both Marysville-Pilchuck and Jackson. A strong third leg and a final 50-yard freestyle anchor leg by freshman Anni Hecker helped lift the Thunderbirds past the Tomahawks.

“Today was better than I really could have imagined,” McDowell said of Shorewood, which broke two school records in relays and saw Dana Michaels break the school record in the 200 freestyle. “... I was actually kind of stunned (at the record’s falling) ... I was really, really impressed with my kids.”

Shorewood dominated the overall meet, but the most impressive individual performance easily went to Jackson senior Alana Pazevic. Pazevic, a member of Jackson’s state-qualifying 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams, shattered two district meet and Western Conference records. First, Pazevic broke her own meet and Wesco record in the 100 butterfly. The senior set a record of 57.76 seconds in preliminaries and followed that up with a record-breaking 55.98 seconds in the finals.

“I was really excited,” Pazevic said. “I was feeling really good so I gave it my all.”

For an encore, Pazevic annihilated Kim Milligan of Shorewood’s 17-year old Wesco record (57.21) in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.63 seconds.

“I didn’t think I was going to go that fast,” Pazevic said, adding. “... I’m really excited because there’s going to be some good competition (at the state meet).”

Kamiak’s Louise Moores won two individual championships (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle). She also helped get the Knights’ 200 freestyle relay team to state with a blazing 50-yard anchor leg (24.74 seconds).

“In both relays (200 freestyle and 400 freestyle) I was faster (than the winning 50 freestyle time), it’s for the team ... other people are relying on me,” Moores said. “For the individual events it’s all about me ... and here we haven’t made a relay to state so it was all about place, it was all about fighting to the end to get a spot, I feed off that.”

Moores’ late push helped Kamiak overtake Oak Harbor for second place in the 200 freestyle relay.

Kamiak’s senior thrives in short-distance races, Moores held off Lake Stevens sophomore Lindsay Vanderhoff for a .27 second win in the 50 freestyle and beat Shorewood freshman Anni Hecker by .15 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

“To be so fast, it’s all about training and you just have to rely on your body, I can’t remember any 50 (freestyle) race unless I really did badly,” Moores said. “When I do well and I go fast I don’t see anyone else and I don’t remember anything, it’s just all about the body.”

Meet runner-up M-P received strong performances from its relay teams and individually from freshman Hannah Taylor.

Taylor, who already holds seven school records in individual events for the Tomahawks, won the 200 individual medley (2:06.97, another school record) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.92).

M-P head coach Jaci LeGore-Hodgins said seeing Shorewood’s depth at the district level is an excellent measuring rod for other teams.

“It’s really good (to see Shorewood’s performance) because we want a standard like that that we all can pursue,” LeGore-Hodgins said.

McDowell, who said Shorewood’s goal was a top 10 finish (at state), said the Thunderbirds are confident, but feared the team’s depth will have a hard time carrying over to the state meet because of competition and fewer scoring positions.

“I think that (the team) should feel really confident, we have three girls that haven’t rested yet that are in individuals and then we have three relays that we’re hoping to make finals in two of them and consolation finals in the other one and break two school records again in the relay,” McDowell said. “... We don’t carry the same depth at the state level ... we’ll just go and see how we can do and let the place fall where it will.”
