REFERENDUM 71

Editorial lacks solid evidence

I just read The Herald’s Nov. 5 editorial, “A historic vote for fairness,” praising the passage of Referendum 71 and think that the paper defended and supported the new law for some very poor reasons.

The Herald asserted that the vote to approve the law was not a vote to approve same-sex marriage. While this is technically true, the assertion misses the greater context of the issue. Gay rights activists are committed to attaining full marital status for homosexuals and freely admit this.

The Herald also posited that children raised by homosexuals are raised at least as well as children raised by heterosexual couples. This argument is specious, at best supported by some very questionable studies. The Herald might be more credible if it backed up its arguments more convincingly.
