Hornsby exhibit now at MLT library

The Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission presents the Gail Hornsby Exhibit now through Nov. 30.

Excited by an 8-pack of Crayola crayons she received in the third grade, Gail Hornsby has been interested in drawing and painting ever since. She received her formal art education at the University of Colorado and the University of Texas in the early 1970s, receiving honors and awards from both schools.

For a decade after college, Hornsby traveled to many colorful locales. She worked as a professional portrait painter in the French Quarter of New Orleans for three years, and then spent the next four years in Europe, residing in Scotland and the Southern Coast of Spain.

Hornsby has lived in the Seattle area for nearly 20 years. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries throughout downtown Seattle, Kirkland, Everett, Edmonds, Bothell, and Camano Island. “Hired by the Arts Umbrella in 2000, I have been very proud to teach on their staff,” Hornsby said.

Acrylic paint on canvas or Masonite has become her favorite medium. “Depicting people, either in groups or luxuriating alone is my most frequent subject matter,” Hornsby said. “I love color and brilliant light, which adds dramatic shadows to the compositions.” Her work has been compared to Edward Hopper.
