Silvertips beat Spokane 5-2

SPOKANE — Tuesday night the Everett Silvertips received their first look at Kyle Beach in a Spokane Chiefs uniform.

However, the Tips turned the reunion into a sideshow.

Everett controlled play through most of the game, and the Tips came away with a 5-2 victory over the Chiefs. The victory meant the Tips finished 5-1-1-0 in their stretch of seven straight road games.

Shane Harper scored two goals and Kellan Tochkin added a goal and two assists for Everett (11-5-1-0), which took a 3-0 lead into the third period and a 5-1 lead into the final minute.

Byron Froese and Tyler Maxwell also scored for the Tips and Thomas Heemskerk made 26 saves to earn the victory in goal.

Beach, the controversial former Tips star who was traded back into the U.S. Division at the beginning of the season, scored the late consolation goal for Spokane (10-7-1-0), which saw a four-game winning streak snapped. Mitch Wahl scored the Chiefs’ other goal, while Michael Tadjdeh made 31 saves in net for Spokane.

Everett opened the scoring midway through the first period during a brief five-on-three power play. Harper took a look from the top of the left circle and picked out the far corner with a wrister, staking Everett to a 1-0 lead 12 minutes, 50 seconds into the game.

The Tips took control of play after the opening goal, then broke the game open in the second period. At 14:37 the Tips caused all kinds of havoc in front of the Spokane goal, and when the puck kicked out to Radko Gudas at the right point, his shot was tipped past Tadjdeh by Froese to make it 2-0. Everett then made it 3-0 at 18:06. A nice breakout pass by Chris de la Lande sent Harper away on a breakaway, and Harper made a move to his backhand to score past Tadjdeh to give the Tips a three-goal cushion going into the third period.

Spokane gave itself a little life early in the third when Wahl scored on the power play at 2:04 to cut Everett’s lead to 3-1.

But the Tips answered quickly, Tochkin scoring on a backhander in close when the Chiefs couldn’t clear the puck, giving Everett a 4-1 lead at 4:47.

The Tips put it away at 14:43 on the power play, Maxwell banging in a rebound from a shot off a faceoff to make it 5-1.

Spokane received a late consolation goal from Beach with 59 seconds remaining, but it was too little too late for the Chiefs.
