PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP: Monroe upsets Emerald Ridge PUYALLUP — Nobody’s perfect.The Monroe girls soccer team proved it Tuesday night, handing Emerald Ridge its first loss of the season, a 5-1 decision in the first round of the 4A state playoffs. The host Jaguars (18-1) struck first with a goal in the fourth minute. But it was all Monroe after that. Kaylie Sowler scored two goals and Kierra Wilkins, Lorelie Ritzert and Casey Neumann also added goals for the Bearcats (12-5-2) who began their scoring in the 25th minute. They scored again in the 30th minute to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. After the break, Monroe scored three goals in 10 minutes (57th, 60th and 67th minutes) to pull away. “Our offense exploded,” Monroe head coach Kathleen Potthast said. The Bearcats also passed the ball well, with many goals coming off crosses into the center of the field. Alecia Longsine led Monroe with two assists. Kayla Browne and and Kaitlynn Chesemore also added assists for the Bearcats. “I really do believe that we played a lot of team ball tonight,” Potthast said. “I think we stepped it up as a team and communicated well on the field. Those four assists are huge.” Monroe also got some stellar play from its goalkeeper, Dani Philippart. “Dani Philippart made two huge saves,” Potthast said. “There was a rocket shot high in the air that she got that would have made it 2-0. That would have been hard to come back from.” “Our defense stepped it up,” Potthast continued. “They had to shut three great players down.” Monroe moves on to face Issaquah, a 3-0 winner over Bellarmine Prep, on Saturday. “I’ve just heard a little bit about them,” Potthast said of Issaquah. “I know they’re a good team. “We’re looking forward to going into the quarterfinals. It’s exciting to go in like this.” South Kitsap 2, Kamiak 0: At Silverdale, reserve Jami Cantrell scored in the first half to help lift South Kitsap at Silverdale Stadium in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament. Becca Schoales added an insurance goal in the second half for the Wolves. Kamiak (12-6-2) found it nearly impossible to crack into South Kitsap’s end in the first half. The Knights’ first shot came in the 59th minute from midfielder Cassidy Seckman. “We got a little disorganized in the first half,” Kamiak head coach Beth Stewart said. “We had some opportunities in the second half.” The best one may have been when senior Hillary Hermes hit a diving header off a corner kick that just missed the goal. Stewart also praised the defense of Paige Littrell, whom she said did a “phenominal job” covering South Kitsap’s star players. Despite the loss, Stewart still raved about her team. “I’m really proud of these girls,” she said. “We don’t have a lot of superstars, so they’re kind of a team that plays with everybody together. Nobody relies on just one person. Different people have stepped up all season.” Glacier Peak 2, Sumner 0: At Sumner, Stephenie Cummings scored a goal in the 44th minute off an assist from Louisa Pendergast to put Glacier Peak up before halftime, and then returned the favor in the 62nd minute assisting on a Pendergast goal to lead the Grizzlies’ to the win in the first-round game of the 3A state tournament. Nicole Giovine recorded the shutout for Glacier Peak (16-4-1), which will face Mercer Island on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Cedarcrest 1, Hockinson 0: At Battle Ground, Erica Debrecht scored the game-winner off an Ashton Griffin throw-in in the 11th minute. Goalkeeper Kori Butterfield made it stand up with the shutout. Jenna Haagan was in goal for Hockinson. The first-round 2A state playoff win sets up a fourth meeting this season between Cascade Conference rivals Cedarcrest (13-6-1 overall) and Archbishop Murphy, a 5-0 winner over W.F. West. The two teams met twice in the regular season and again in the district semifinals. Murphy won all three contests. Lakewood 2, Klahowya 1: At Silverdale, Morgan Rettig (Jessica Pouley assist) scored the tying goal in the 52nd minute and then Abby Burke (Kennady Bonnallie) scored the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute to lead Lakewood to the win in the first round of the 2A state tournament. Miranda Head was the goalkeeper for the Cougars (15-5), who had to come from behind after Ruth Hawley (Jessica Drake) put Klahowya up early in the 25th minute, scoring off a corner kick. Cassondra Dick stood in goal for Klahowya. Lakewood moves on to face Sehome, which defeated Black Hills 3-2 in a shootout, in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Bellingham. King’s 1, Seattle Christian 0: At Shoreline, Hillary Zevenbergen (MacKenzie Graham assist) scored the game’s lone goal in the 50th minute to lead King’s to the win in the first round of the 1A state tournament. Carolyn Dapper got the shutout in goal for the Knights (15-5). King’s moved on to face Seattle Academy in a quarterfinal game. |
