NBA ROUNDUP: Oden, Blazers hurt Timberwolves 107-84
Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS — From throwing down dunks to swatting shots and even running the fast break, Greg Oden sure looked like a franchise center Wednesday night.
Two seasons removed from microfracture knee surgery, Oden may finally be starting to fulfill the promise of a No. 1 overall pick.
Oden had 18 points and 11 rebounds in three quarters to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 107-84 victory over the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves.
“He’s slowly showing some things that we haven’t seen him do,” coach Nate McMillan said. “He makes good decisions. I think he’s a good passer. I think he’s very patient on the block.”
Oden was the No. 1 overall pick in 2007. But he missed his first season because of a knee injury, then was underwhelming in 61 games for the Blazers last season.
Brandon Roy added 14 points for the Blazers, who have won four in a row and are off to their best start since 1999 at 6-3.
Jonny Flynn had 15 points and six rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have lost eight in a row since a season-opening win over New Jersey.
Cavaliers 102, Magic 93
ORLANDO, Fla. — LeBron James scored 36 points, Shaquille O’Neal provided an inside presence and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Orlando Magic 102-93 on Wednesday night in a rematch of the Eastern Conference finals.
O’Neal scored 10 points and kept Dwight Howard in foul trouble for most of the night, giving James and Co. all the inside strength they sorely lacked last season. Mo Williams added 28 points to help the Cavs take a 15-point halftime lead, go ahead by 20 after three quarters and roll to an easy victory.
Celtics 105, Jazz 86
BOSTON — Rajon Rondo had 14 points and 11 assists to help Boston improve to 8-1, matching the start from their title-winning season two years ago.
Spurs 92, Mavericks 83
SAN ANTONIO — Richard Jefferson scored 29 points and the San Antonio Spurs survived another game without the injured Tony Parker and Tim Duncan.
Hawks 114, Knicks 101
NEW YORK — Al Horford scored a season-high 25 points and had nine rebounds, and Atlanta overcame a 14-point deficit to send New York to its fifth straight loss.
76ers 82, Nets 79
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Marreese Speights had a go-ahead three-point play with 1:10 left and Philadelphia extended New Jersey’s franchise-worst start to 0-8. Speights finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Pacers 108, Warriors 94
INDIANAPOLIS — Danny Granger scored 31 points and had a career-high 16 rebounds to lead Indiana to its third straight victory.
Raptors 99, Bulls 89
TORONTO — Chris Bosh had 28 points and 11 rebounds, and Jose Calderon scored 18 points to help Toronto even its record at 4-4.
Bucks 108, Nuggets 102
MILWAUKEE — Rookie Brandon Jennings scored 14 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter, and Andrew Bogut added 23 points and 10 rebounds for Milwaukee.
Pistons 98, Bobcats 75
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Charlie Villanueva had a season-high 30 points for Detroit, outscoring Charlotte 18-12 by himself in the third quarter.
Rockets 104, Grizzlies 79
HOUSTON — Luis Scola had 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Carl Landry had 20 points for Houston, sending Memphis to its seventh straight loss.
Suns 124, Hornets 104
PHOENIX — Amare Stoudemire and Steve Nash combined to hit all eight of their first-quarter shots and Phoenix’s 124 points were a season high.
Thunders 83, Clippers 79
LOS ANGELES — Kevin Durant stepped back and hit the go-ahead jumper from the left corner with 38 seconds remaining for two of his 30 points, giving Oklahoma City the victory.
LeBron mum on next year
ORLANDO, Fla. — Frustrated by the repeated questions, LeBron James said he won’t talk about his possible free agency next summer until after this season.
James cut off interviews after being hit with questions about free agency and teaming with Miami’s Dwyane Wade, who has said the two have discussed forming a mega-tandem.
