Seems Like Yesterday
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Opening tomorrow was Econo-Mart, Snohomish County’s first discount department store. Memberships were open to the general public. Two dollars bought a lifetime membership for a husband and wife. Econo-Mart was located on Evergreen Way at Pecks Drive.
The annual meeting of the Last Mans Club was coming up tomorrow at the Snohomish Airfield Skyroom Cafe. Presently heading the organization were Rudy Nichols, president; Harry Bennett, vice president, and Cecil Campbell, secretary.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
For the second year in a row, the Snohomish County PUD was preparing a budget that utility officials believed would spare its customers a hike in electricity prices. The proposed 1985 budget was designed to absorb all of an anticipated Bonneville Power Administration rate increase.
Love Israel had returned to life at the ranch near Arlington. After infighting within the commune and temporary self-exile, he had returned to what he called “a new bite on life.” Love Israel founded his organization 16 years earlier based on a belief in the oneness of humankind. Until recently, commune members had lived on Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill.
