Icy conditions lead to numerous wrecks on county roads
Icy roads caught drivers off guard throughout Snohomish County this morning, causing more than 20 vehicle crashes in less than two hours.
One crash about 8 a.m. left a Washington State Patrol trooper with an injured thumb, trooper Keith Leary said.
The trooper and a State Patrol sergeant were investigating a one-car wreck on northbound Highway 525 at I-5 when a Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle struck a concrete barrier, then smashed into the sergeant’s patrol car, Leary said. The sergeant, standing in front of his vehicle was pushed by his car but quickly managed to jump out of the way. He was not hurt.
The Ford then spun 180 degrees and hit the trooper’s car, Leary said. The trooper was treated at the scene for his injuries and released.
Both patrol cars were totaled. The Ford’s driver wasn’t injured.
Another crash about 8 a.m. involved a state Department of Transportation sanding truck and caused crews to close northbound Highway 525 at Highway 99 for about an hour and a half.
Between 6:30 and 8:00 this morning, troopers responded to more than 20 collisions, Leary said.
“We were lucky the injuries were minor. This is a perfect example why we need to be prepared and watch the weather closely this time of year,” he said.
