TOP 25 MEN’S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

No. 1 Kansas 101, Hofstra 65
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Xavier Henry hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points to set a school freshman record, and the top-ranked Jayhawks (1-0) wore down the overmatched Pride (0-1). Sherron Collins added 23 points and Cole Aldrich had 11 points and eight rebounds, lifting the Jayhawks to their 42nd straight win at Allen Fieldhouse.

No. 2 Michigan State 97, Florida Gulf Coast 58
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Durrell Summers scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half and Kalin Lucas scored 21 to lead the Spartans (1-0) over the Eagles (0-1). Summers’ go-ahead dunk on an alley oop sparked a 17-4 run that put Michigan State in control. The Spartans have won 40 in a row against nonconference teams at the Breslin Center.

No. 4 Kentucky 75, Morehead State 59
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Freshman Eric Bledsoe scored 24 points while starting in place of John Wall as the Wildcats (1-0) opened the John Calipari era with a win over the Eagles (0-1). Kenneth Faried led Morehead State (0-1) with 17 points, but the defending Ohio Valley Conference champions couldn’t keep up even with Wall on the bench. The highly touted recruit sat out as part of an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits from his AAU coach.

No. 5 Villanova 84, Fairleigh Dickinson 61
VILLANOVA, Pa. — Corey Stokes scored 20 points, Corey Fisher added 13 and the Wildcats (1-0) overcame a sloppy first half and a poor game from Scottie Reynolds to beat the Knights (0-1). Reynolds managed just eight points on 2-of-10 shooting for Villanova, which is coming off a trip to the Final Four. Antonio Pena added nine points and 10 rebounds.

No. 7 Purdue 89, Cal State Northridge 63
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Robbie Hummel scored 17 points, JaJuan Johnson had 15 and the Boilermakers (1-0) coasted to an easy win over the Matadors (0-1). Freshman reserve D.J. Byrd scored 13 and Chris Kramer added 11 points for Purdue, which was playing without starting point guard Lewis Jackson. He was serving a one-game suspension for participating in an unspecified NCAA-sanctioned event without approval from his coach.

No. 9 Duke 96, UNC Greensboro 62
DURHAM, N.C. — Kyle Singler scored 20 points in the first half, and the Blue Devils (1-0) easily beat the Spartans (0-1) even without suspended guard Nolan Smith and injured forward Mason Plumlee. Jon Scheyer added 18 points for the Blue Devils, the ACC’s preseason co-favorites with North Carolina, who improved to 28-2 in openers under Mike Krzyzewski.

No. 10 Tennessee 83, Austin Peay 54
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Scotty Hopson scored 16 points, Cameron Tatum had 15 off the bench and the Volunteers (1-0) sped past the Governors (0-1).

No. 12 Connecticut 75, William & Mary 66
STORRS, Conn. — Jerome Dyson scored 27 points in his first regular-season game since tearing the meniscus in his right knee last season, leading the Huskies (1-0) over the Tribe (0-1). The senior guard also had eight assists and four steals, Stanley Robinson added 17 points and freshman Alex Oriakhi had eight points and 10 rebounds for UConn. William & Mary kept the game close by hitting 13 shots from 3-point range, and got within four in the second half.

Rider 88, No. 18 Mississippi State 74
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mike Ringgold and Novar Gadson scored 21 points each as the Broncs pulled off the first big upset of the season by beating the Bulldogs (0-1). Jarvis Varnado led MSU with 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots, but Mississippi State managed just 10 field goals in the second half.

No. 20 Georgetown 74, Tulane 58
NEW ORLEANS — Greg Monroe finished with game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hoyas (1-0) over the Green Wave (0-1).

No. 23 Illinois 96, SIU Edwardsville 69
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Freshman guard Brandon Paul scored 22 points and the Illini (1-0) scored their most points in a game since 2004 while beating the Cougars (0-1). Paul and D.J. Richardson were the first freshmen to start for Illinois since Brian Randle in 2003. The Illini’s Jeff Jordan was forced to sit out the game as part of a two game suspension by the NCAA for playing in an unsanctioned event during the summer.

No. 24 Clemson 84, Presbyterian 41
CLEMSON, S.C. — Freshman Noel Johnson hit four 3-pointers, and the Tigers (1-0) hit 14 from beyond the arc while routing the Blue Hose (0-1).

No. 25 Minnesota 87, Tennessee Tech 50
MINNEAPOLIS — Lawrence Westbrook scored 22 points and keyed a big second-half run to help the Golden Gophers (1-0) pull away from the overmatched Golden Eagles (0-1).
