Mavericks’ Howard out indefinitely with bum ankle

MINNEAPOLIS — Dallas Mavericks swingman Josh Howard is out indefinitely to continue his recovery from surgery on his left ankle.

Howard missed all the preseason and the first five games of the regular season after having arthroscopic surgery on his ankle and wrist in May. He returned to the starting lineup on Saturday against Toronto and played in the past three games.

Coach Rick Carlisle said Friday that Howard needs more time to recover. He did not put a timetable on Howard’s return. Howard will still do some work in practice in addition to his rehabilitation while he tries to regain the strength and mobility in the ankle.

Rockets reassign Dorsey

HOUSTON — The Houston Rockets have assigned center Joey Dorsey to the team’s developmental league partner and waived forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu on Friday.

The 6-foot-8 Dorsey, who has not appeared in a game with the Rockets this season, will join the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The Rockets took over basketball operations of the Vipers in June.

Mensah-Bonsu played a total of 12 minutes in four games this season, averaging 1.3 points. He signed as a free agent on Sept. 3.

Parker, Duncan practice

SAN ANTONIO — Tim Duncan and Tony Parker appear closer to returning to the San Antonio Spurs after missing two games with ankle injuries.

Parker and Duncan practiced Friday and were listed as questionable for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma City. Neither has played since hurting their left ankles in a loss last week at Portland.

The Spurs beat Toronto and Dallas earlier this week despite missing their All-Star duo.

T-Wolves’ Hollins ejected

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Timberwolves forward Ryan Hollins was ejected Friday night against Dallas after picking up his second technical foul in the third quarter.

Hollins was assessed a technical foul after teammate Jonny Flynn and Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki got into a confrontation earlier in the period.

Hollins later went to the hoop and was fouled hard by Dallas forward Drew Gooden. He swung his elbow wildly at Gooden, but did not make contact. Gooden received a flagrant foul and Hollins was given his second technical, prompting the automatic ejection.

Hollins played 27 games for the Mavericks last year and was signed as a free agent by Minnesota this offseason. He had five points and six rebounds in the game.
