    King’s secures another state title

YAKIMA — For the second year in a row, the King’s volleyball team walked away from the 1A state meet as champions.

After fighting their way from a No. 6 seed at Tri-districts to a championship match with Chelan, the Knights recovered from a first-game loss to win the trophy in four matches at the Yakima SunDome on Friday.

“In the first match, Chelan was a strong opponent,” said King’s coach Steve Bain. “It was two volleyball teams playing at a really high level.”

Led by senior outside hitter Dionna Kirton’s 25 kills and 13 digs, the Knights edged out Chelan 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20.

“It was a tough match and every point was important,” said Bain. “I feel very fortunate that we prevailed.”

Strong performances by senior setter Anna Cesari (45 assists, nine digs, six kills, three aces), senior outside hitter Alison McConnaughey (14 kills) and sophomore libero Mckenzie Daniels ( 18 digs) helped the Knights (20-3) seal the championship.

En route to the state title, King’s played Cascade of Leavenworth in the semifinals. The Knights won 25-14, 25-17, 25-17 to earn their second straight trip to the state championship match.

Kirton recorded 15 kills and 14 digs, Daniels had 12 digs and Cesari added 26 assists in the game against Cascade. Senior Jennifer Dame provided solid serving with four aces.

“We went in knowing we needed a solid team effort,” said King’s coach Steve Bain. “We had a great tournament.”

    2B Day 1

Darrington was knocked out of the championship bracket in the first round after losing 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 25-16) to Kittitas. The Loggers came back to eliminate Reardan 3-2 (21-25, 15-25, 25-15, 27-25, 15-11) in consolation play. Darrington (15-5) play Tekoa-Oakesdale in another elimination match today. The winner of that contest goes on to play for fifth place. La Conner, the pre-tournament favorite, won its first match 3-0 over Northwest Christian-Lacey and plays Colfax today in the quarterfinals.

    1B Day 1

North Sound Christian (16-3) was upset 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-14) by Colton in the first round and plays Sprague-Harrington in a consolation match today.
