Democrats pick 3 prosecutor candidates
By Diana Hefley and Katya Yefimova Herald Writers
EVERETT — Snohomish County Democrats on Saturday chose three candidates to replace Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney Janice Ellis.
Ellis announced in October that she would step down before the end of her term to take a job with the Tulalip Tribes.
Because she is a Democrat, the county’s Democrats were tasked with submitting three possible replacements to the County Council. The council is expected to vote on Dec. 9.
A total of 156 votes were cast at the meeting of the county’s Democratic precinct committee officers, party chairman Bill Phillips said.
Seattle city prosecutor James Kenny emerged as the party’s top pick with 90 votes. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Mark Roe followed with 65 votes. Fire commissioner Millie Judge qualified as the third candidate with one vote.
The impressive turnout — the county has about 280 precinct committee officers total — shows that Democrats feel passionately about their choices, Phillips said.
Kenny and Roe spoke at the meeting. They both said they plan to run for the position, which will be on the ballot in 2010.
Kenny filed in June. Roe, a 22-year veteran of the office, said he filed for the position months ago when he knew his boss wouldn’t seek re-election.
Judge recently was elected a commissioner with Snohomish County Fire District 1.
Ellis will be the prosecutor for the tribes. Tribal leaders decided earlier this year to hire an in-house prosecutor to more aggressively prosecute crimes on the reservation and dedicate more attention to child welfare needs.
Ellis’ last day with the county is Nov. 29.
