Democrats pick 3 prosecutor candidates

EVERETT — Snohomish County Democrats on Saturday chose three candidates to replace Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney Janice Ellis.

Ellis announced in October that she would step down before the end of her term to take a job with the Tulalip Tribes.

Because she is a Democrat, the county’s Democrats were tasked with submitting three possible replacements to the County Council. The council is expected to vote on Dec. 9.

A total of 156 votes were cast at the meeting of the county’s Democratic precinct committee officers, party chairman Bill Phillips said.

Seattle city prosecutor James Kenny emerged as the party’s top pick with 90 votes. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Mark Roe followed with 65 votes. Fire commissioner Millie Judge qualified as the third candidate with one vote.

The impressive turnout — the county has about 280 precinct committee officers total — shows that Democrats feel passionately about their choices, Phillips said.

Kenny and Roe spoke at the meeting. They both said they plan to run for the position, which will be on the ballot in 2010.

Kenny filed in June. Roe, a 22-year veteran of the office, said he filed for the position months ago when he knew his boss wouldn’t seek re-election.

Judge recently was elected a commissioner with Snohomish County Fire District 1.

Ellis will be the prosecutor for the tribes. Tribal leaders decided earlier this year to hire an in-house prosecutor to more aggressively prosecute crimes on the reservation and dedicate more attention to child welfare needs.

Ellis’ last day with the county is Nov. 29.

Democrats pick 3 prosecutor candidates
Stand by. Everyone knows that Dems are soft on crime. The next one will most likely favor "programs" and "rehabilitation" over PUNISHMENT for criminal behavior. You don't like it? Sorry, it's the cold hard facts bub.

Prosector Nominee
I would suggest that the Snohomish County Democrats actually put forward a nominee and 2 runners-up for the appointment. The vote tally was not even close with Jim Kenny receiving almost a third more votes than did Mr. Roe. I certainly hope that the members of the county council take note that, after having mulitple opportunities to hear each of the two announced candidates; to measure their experience and their list of endorsers, the PCOs gave such a strong affirmation to Mr. Kenny - and that they will give this vote the strong weight it deserves during their deliberations.

Peace,
