PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP: Archbishop Murphy headed to 2A semifinals

DUVALL — Tasha Pabisz scored both goals as Archbishop Murphy defeated Cedarcrest for the fourth time this season, 2-0 in a 2A state quarterfinal girls soccer playoff game Saturday at Cedarcrest High School.

“It's difficult to beat a very good team four times in a season,” Murphy coach Dick Henderson said.

Murphy (21-0) advanced to a second contest against Sehome in next Friday's semifinals. The Wildcats beat Sehome 2-1 (shootout) in the District 1 championship game. They'll meet at 8 p.m. at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

“We're just looking forward to playing that game,” Henderson. “It's the semifinals. It's the path to the final.”

Lindsey Bos assisted on Pabisz's first goal in the 33rd minute. Sam Pettinger assisted on the second in the 53rd minute.

Cedarcrest head coach Denis Watts was extremely pleased with his team, which graduated nine players from last season's team.

“We had a great season, its pretty difficult to be more successful than we were this season,” Watts said. “Archbishop at every position has strength and depth its truly remarkable.”

Watts went on, saying how difficult of a time any team will have facing the Wildcats later on in state this year.

“I don't think there is anybody on the other side (eastern bracket) that could beat anyone of the District 1 teams. Its a great conference and District 1 is an absolute powerhouse.”

The last time Murphy faced Cedarcrest, Murphy won 1-0 with a poke-in in front of the net amongst a crowd of players. Watts said that the two Murphy goals Saturday were “college level, professional shots.”

The mixture of senior captains and young, up-and-coming talent was Watts' biggest praise. Watts said captains Clare O'Donnell and Ashton Griffen played phenomenal, and goalkeeper Kori Butterfield played “miraculous, very solid.” Sophomore Maggie Pleis and Gwen Bieck harness great abilities and skills that Watts said will help Cedarcrest (13-7-1) in the future.

“I'm very proud of where we went,” Watts said. “To come back this year and get to the quarterfinals is a huge accomplishment.”

Sehome 1, Lakewood 0 (shootout): At Everett, Sehome managed just five shots in regulation, but Sehome won 3-2 in the shootout to knock Lakewood from the 2A state tournament. Lakewood (15-6-0 overall) made a penalty kick to kick-start the shootout, and Cougars' goalie Miranda Head made a save, but Sehome came from behind to edge out Lakewood in the Cougars' seventh shootout game of the season.

Mercer Island 2, Glacier Peak 1: At Mercer Island, Glacier Peak's Brooke Gilbert scored unassisted in the 70th minute, but Mercer Island (14-3-1) scored two goals in the first half in a span of six minutes to eliminate Glacier Peak (16-5-1) from the 3A state tournament.

Seattle Academy 1, King's 0 (shootout): At Shoreline, Seattle Academy (15-2-1) scored five times in the shootout session, defeating King's (15-6-0 overall) and eliminating the Knights from the 1A state tournament.

La Conner 3, Providence Classical Christian 2: At Everett, La Conner's DJ Carr had a pair of goals, and Kyle McKnight had one goal and one assist as La Conner eliminated Providence Classical Christian from state contention. Hayden Thomas (Ryan Morris assist) and Ryan Morris (Eric Moisant) scored goals for PCC (9-6-2 overall). Luke Morris was in goal for PCC, and Taylor Fay manned the goal for La Conner (13-3-2).
