Jackson senior and University of Florida signee Alana Pazevic cut her preliminary times, but couldn't quite reach the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke events. Pazevic finished third (56.20 seconds) in the 100 butterfly, behind a state-record swim by Eastlake sophomore Katie Kinnear (53.10). Ballard's Annemarie Thayer finished second (55.39), but neither swimmer could catch Kinnear following a fantastic jump at the start. Pazevic, a former state champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle, took second in the 100 backstroke (54.94) behind Thayer. The Timberwolves, last year's state champion, lost a lot to graduation and the preseason departure of swimmer Amber McDermott, but the squad was still strong enough to capture seventh place — the highest place of any Wesco team. Skyline High of Sammamish won the overall title with 234 points. 4A District 1 champion Shorewood, which took eighth place, got a strong individual performance from junior Dana Michaels. Michaels placed third in both the 200 freestyle (1:50.80) and the 500 freestyle (4:57.66). “I think in my 500 I could have swam better,” Michaels said, adding that she tried to not let Skyline's Andie Taylor, the swimmer of the meet, beat her by too much. “That was a little nerve wracking ... she's (Taylor) a fast girl, but I try not to think about who's around me.” Skyline's Taylor, a senior, set a state record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.55. Shorewood's finish was it's highest in recent memory, according to head coach Susie McDowell, in her 13th season as head coach. “I think as a district we did really well,” McDowell said. Along with Jackson and Shorewood, Marysville-Pilchuck (13th), Kamiak (15th) and Edmonds-Woodway (20th) finished among the top-20 teams. All told, Wesco swimmers had a top-three placer in seven of nine individual events. Kamiak senior Louise Moores accomplished what she set out to do at state — Moores placed third in the 50 freestyle (24.50 seconds) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (53.56), topping her preliminary times in each race. Moores also benefitted from a false start by runner-up Chelsea Bailey in the 50 freestyle. Bailey, a Kentlake junior, finished about one half-second behind race winner Amber Cratsenberg of Auburn Thomas Jefferson High, but was disqualified for moving in the starting block. Moores' time was fourth overall, but Bailey's misstep pushed the senior into third for the event. “I knew that a lot of people in prelims played it safe, so I knew I had a lot more competition than the two people ahead of me,” Moores said. The senior was unsure if Bailey could have caught Cratsenberg if the Kentlake junior didn't get disqualified. “I don't know if the false start would have took that half-second off,” Moores said. Moores, who battled stress-induced hives around state meet time last season, was all smiles after her two individual events. “I completely psyched myself out for the meet (last year),” Moores said. “This year I've been a lot more seasoned. ... I've been to bigger meets, it's a lot more happy this year.” M-P head coach Jaci LeGore-Hodgins was named the state coach of the year and Tomahawks freshman Hannah Taylor helped boost the team with a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley. “It was really cool, going in fifth (from prelims) it was kind of nerve-wracking,” Taylor said of the race and added that she was relieved to see her name in third after the finish. “It was crazy.” Taylor, who set seven individual records at M-P in her first season, outstretched Seattle Garfield's Maddy Morgan for third. “I couldn't see (Morgan) at the end,” Taylor said. “I just put my head down and pushed it hard at the end.” Also for the Tomahawks, senior Sarah Clark placed third in the 1-meter diving event. At 2 minutes, 17.33 seconds, Renslo was not quite 6 seconds behind state champion Julia Sanders of Hockinson. Renslo also finished second to Snders in the 100 butterfly. Again she was a little more than 5 seconds behind Sanders, who swam an All-America Consideration time of 56.88 seconds. Sarah Bettag matched Renslo's feat in the 50 freestyle, finishing second in 25.34 seconds. She was a quarter second behind Sehome's Ali Fisher. Bettag also placed seventh in the 100 free.
