UW's Kingma returns after bout with kidney stones
SEATTLE -- University of Washington women's basketball player Kristi Kingma was back on the practice court this week after sitting out the Huskies' weekend opener with dizziness.
Kingma said Tuesday that she suffered kidney stones early last week and that the medication caused dizziness and a severe headache that set in before Saturday's game at Portland State.
"I battled it all week and thought I could play," she said, "but I couldn't."
The sophomore from Mill Creek said she started experiencing severe pain early last Tuesday morning, and she spent the entire day at the hospital. Kingma returned to the hospital early Friday morning but was back at UW in time to watch practice that afternoon.
Kingma, who averaged 8.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game as a starter last season, is expected to play Wednesday night against BYU. She passed the kidney stones Sunday night and said her health is about "90 percent" heading into the Huskies' home opener.
Coach Tia Jackson said it's a relief to have Kingma back in action.
"We can all clap on that," Jackson said. "She had a great practice (Monday). It will be good to have a key component back to our game."
The Huskies (0-1) host BYU on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
