Kidney stones forced Kristi Kingma (right) to miss Washington’s season opener against Portland State.

SEATTLE — Nine days ago, University of Washington women’s basketball player Kristi Kingma went to bed feeling as healthy as ever. She woke up the next morning in excruciating pain.

What the sophomore from Mill Creek didn’t know then was that she was suffering from kidney stones, which hospitalized her for most of last Tuesday and again Friday morning. Feeling light-headed from IV’s and medication, Kingma sat out the Huskies’ season-opening game Saturday at Portland State.

Tonight, having passed the painful stones and returned to the practice court, Kingma will make her delayed season debut when UW hosts Brigham Young at Hec Edmondson Pavilion.

“We can all clap on that,” head coach Tia Jackson said of having Kingma on the court. “… It’ll be good to have a key component back in our game.”

Kingma is excited to be back on the court, but she admitted Tuesday that she’s only at about “90 percent” in terms of health and conditioning. A starter last season, Kingma is expected to come off the UW bench tonight.

She’s just relieved to be back on the court.

“It was definitely tough watching, especially it being a close game,” she said of a 67-66 loss to Portland State that she watched while sitting on the Huskies’ bench. “But more than anything, I was just hoping to feel well. I had a major headache on the bench. I was just hoping to get through the game. I didn’t feel like myself.”

While Kingma still doesn’t totally feel like herself, she plans to give whatever she has to tonight’s game.

“I can feel a little bit of the wind getting caught out of me,” the former Jackson High School star said Tuesday afternoon. “I don’t really know what to expect out of myself. I’ll just give whatever I can. If it’s a lot, it’s a lot.”
