Gold Bar couple admit animal cruelty in puppy mill case

A Gold Bar couple face up to a year in jail for their role in an alleged puppy mill operation.

GOLD BAR — When Snohomish County officials raided a home near here in January, the stench of dog urine and feces was overwhelming.

Excrement littered the home. The small building shook as dozens of dogs kept in pens barked. Officials found six tiny puppy bodies in a freezer stored along with food.

More dead dogs were found in a garbage bin. Nearly 160 dogs were rescued, many with matted coats and serious health problems.

Officials said the house was part of a multimillion-dollar puppy mill operation.

On Friday, Jason Dean Larsen and Serenna Lynn Larsen, both 38, entered guilty pleas to six counts each of first-degree animal cruelty in Snohomish County Superior Court. The couple lived in the home and were responsible for caring for the animals, prosecutors said.

They face up to a year behind bars when they're sentenced on Jan. 25.

Prior to their pleas, the couple said they didn't know that what they were doing was illegal and they were following the instruction of Renee Roske, the owner of Wags 'n' Wiggles, a Snohomish dog breeding business.

In return for raising the animals, Roske paid their rent and other living expenses, Jason Larsen has said.

As part of their plea agreement, they said they were employees when they caused substantial and considerable suffering to the dogs.

The Larsens lived like indentured servants, defense attorney Gabe Rothstein said Friday.

They were underequipped and did not profit off the arrangement, he said.

It was Roske who instructed the Larsens to keep dead puppies in the freezer, he said. The home near Gold Bar where they lived is owned by Roske's sister.

Roske has not been charged.

Her Snohomish County kennel license was revoked after 13 years of violations, records show.

The day following the Gold Bar-area raid, Snohomish County officials obtained a court order to search Roske's home. No dogs were taken, but officials did remove illegal drugs.

Roske said many of her dogs were moved to her parents' kennel in Skagit County, court documents said.

Officials there raided the parents' property and seized around 450 dogs, many in terrible condition. Roske's parents, Marjorie and Richard Sundberg, face animal cruelty charges in Skagit County.

In September Roske attempted to have half a dozen of the dogs seized in Skagit County returned. A Skagit County judge denied her request.

She also applied in Snohomish County for a new kennel license.

The application was denied Wednesday, said Vicki Lubrin, the county's animal control manager. Lubrin said Roske's lengthy history of code violations and complaints from neighbors were the reasons the application was turned down.

Roske may appeal.

Lubrin said she was pleased with the Larsens' guilty pleas.

“We'll wait to hear what happens at the sentencing,” she said.

The dogs rescued from the Gold Bar property were either adopted out to new homes or turned over to breed-specific rescue groups.

Rose Adams of Mill Creek adopted Poncho, a red merle chihuahua.

Her dog seems as if he still is frightened by people, she said.

She too was pleased with the guilty pleas and said she will ask a judge for stiff penalties for the Larsens.

“I think they should suffer,” she said.

Puppy Mills
As long as there are people who are willing to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a puppy, there will be puppy mills. I blame the consumers just as much as I blame the greedy disgusting people who abuse these helpless animals. It's ridiculous to purchase a puppy when millions of beautiful dogs are being put to death each year. I think it's called the dumbing of America. It would be great if everyone who purchased one of these puppies would volunteer at their local animal shelter to help put the dogs to sleep. They could then look into their sorrowful faces and give them their last hug before they die.

Jail time
I would really like to see jail time for these people, not probation, not community service but JAIL time. Let's see what the judge gives them and remember who he is and remember him/her in the next election. Good or bad.

It blows me away that this Renee lady has not been charged with anything. How many times has she been threatened with the removal of her license, and just this year they take it away from her? And how can hundreds of dogs that have been linked to her and her family not be good enough for putting her behind bars? She is just as much at fault for neglecting those animals as the people living in the Gold Bar home are....as employees they did what she asked so they had a place to live, they were living under her payroll. So how can that not be good enough to charge her with anything? I hope she gets what is coming to her, people like her should be treated with the same respect as she gave to those animals.

Sickening
These "humans" deserve to suffer along with that heartless hag and ringleader Roske. She has been exploiting and torturing animals for years. THEY ARE ALL SCUM. Throw the book at the lot of them!!

Animal Torture
It baffles me that so many sick twisted people can find each other to collude to torturing animals in this way. And then, to turn around and try to get another license to do this again? I truly wish that the law allowed judges to smack people upside the head during arraignments and hearings.

Re: Animal Torture
Thanks to Vicki Lubrin and snohomish county to see to it that Renee Roske and her Parents were turned down for a new license.
I belive Renee Roske should also be charged along with Larsens. You cant tell me that she knew nothing about what was going on in Goldbar.
Like I have said before I wouldnt trust her with a stuffed animal much less a live one.
They all should be Fined to the max and spend as much time in jail for what they have done.
How stupid do the Larsens/Roskes think we are trying to say they didnt know what they were doing was illegal.
And why on earth should a plea agreement be a part of this?
It just goes to show us that defence attorney Mr Rothstein is just as bad as his clients for even helping these people with thier case. The only thing he can come up with is they were indentured sevants YEAH RIGHT what a bunch of bull. Agian how stupid do you think we are? Just goes to show us that some lawyers dont have any morals at all. Just in it for the money.
Hopefully snohommish county courts will give them as stiff as sentene as the law allows maybe even take this above and beyond that. This is clearly some thing above and beyond any thing we have ever seen or could even think anybody could do to an animal.
This sounds like some kind of sick and twisted horror move.
These people make me sick.
