More workers laid off in Snohomish County's planning department

EVERETT — Another wave of layoffs is due to sap Snohomish County’s already depleted planning department.

Sixteen employees with county planning and development services received layoff notices earlier this month. All affected employees had been told ahead of time the notices would be coming, county spokesman Christopher Schwarzen said.

The number of people who ultimately lose jobs could end up being lower because of voluntary layoffs, retirements and ongoing budget deliberations, among other factors.

Two years ago, with the housing market at its peak, the planning department employed more than 260 workers. The fall in construction-related revenue has shrunk the work force to less than a third of that number.
