BASEBALL NOTEBOOK

Nationals hire McLaren

WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals have hired former Seattle Mariners manager John McLaren as bench coach, Jim Lett as bullpen coach and Dan Radison as first-base coach. The team also announced Friday that hitting coach Rick Eckstein, pitching coach Steve McCatty and third-base coach Pat Listach will keep their jobs on manager Jim Riggleman’s staff in 2010. Riggleman was McLaren’s bench coach with Seattle at the start of 2008, then replaced him as the team’s skipper when McLaren was fired during the season. McLaren was a special assignment scout for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2009.

Cubs ink Grabow for 2 years

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs and left-handed reliever John Grabow have agreed to a two-year contract. The 31-year-old Grabow combined to go 3-0 with a 3.36 ERA last season in a career-high 75 relief appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cubs. He pitched 30 games for the Cubs after he was traded from the Pirates along with lefty Tom Gorzellany for pitchers Jose Ascanio and Kevin Hart, and minor league infielder Josh Harrison on July 30.

White Sox court Vizquel

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox are closing in on a contract agreement with free agent shortstop Omar Vizquel. The deal could be announced as soon as Monday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not commented. Vizquel, who will be 43 in April, has played 21 major league seasons. Last year he was in a utility role with the Texas Rangers, appearing in 62 games. He batted .266. Vizquel broke in with the Mariners in 1989.

Strieby on 40-man roster

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have purchased the contract of Ryan Strieby, a Mountlake Terrace grad, from Class AA Erie and added the firstbaseman/outfielder to their 40-man roster. Strieby, 24, hit .303 for Erie with 64 runs, 18 doubles, a triple, 19 homers and 59 RBI in 86 games. He was fourth in the Eastern League in home runs despite missing part of the season with a fractured bone in his wrist. The move protects Strieby from the Rule 5 draft.
