Mariners hire three to join scouting department

The Seattle Mariners have hired former major league catchers John Stearns and Todd Greene, along with former minor league manager and hitting instructor Bill Masse, for their major league scouting department.

Stearns, 58, was a four-time All-Star with the Mets. He also played with the Phillies before retiring as a player and continuing as a minor league coach and manager. He coached six seasons with the Yankees, Reds, Orioles and Mets, and managed nine season in the Blue Jays, Reds, Mets and Nationals organizations. He also worked as a scout with the Brewers, Reds, Orioles and Mets off and on from 1986-2002.

Greene, 38, played 11 big-league seasons with the Angels, Blue Jays, Yankees, Rangers, Rockies and Giants. He scouted for the Padres in 2008 and, this year, was the quality assurance coach for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Masse, 43, was the hitting coach for the Mets’ Class AA team in Birmingham this year, and has managed in the Blue Jays and Yankees organizations. He played seven minor league seasons with the Yankees.

The Mariners also have hired Joe Ross, a former longtime assistant baseball coach at the University of Washington, as their Northwest amateur scout. He replaces Jim Fitzgerald, who left the organization in September.
