FINISH LINE: Lakers’ Artest opts to dress casual for TV

Brief appearance

No, Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction.

Artest was just being Artest when he appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night wearing only underwear.

The Houston Rockets said after Artest left the team this summer that he once rode on the team bus in only his underwear to a playoff game.

“I’m so sorry. I was running late,” said Artest, who may have been short on time because he was getting Kimmel’s name shaved in the back of his head.

“You don’t have to put your clothes on,” Kimmel said. “Relax. We’re very casual around here.”

Artest claimed he was actually wearing shorts, saying to Kimmel, “I can even put your pen right in my pocket.”

Kimmel passed on the offer.

PARTING SHOT

“There are worse things than being paid $3 million a year to be miserable. But if you’re a coach who already has tasted big success at a hefty salary somewhere else, it’s difficult to see what a move to South Bend, Ind., does for you, other than putting you and your family through Dante’s nine circles of hell.”

— Rick Morrissey

The Chicago Tribune columnist on why any top notch coach would want to succeed Charlie Weiss as Notre Dame’s head coach — a job fraught with misery not the least of which is dealing with “the unreasonable expectations of a fan base that believes a BCS appearance should be a given every single season.” Speculation is that the school will soon fire Weiss, possibly in the days following Notre Dame’s season-ender Saturday at Stanford.
