Silvertips rally late, beat Spokane in OT

Maxwell’s goal lifts Everett, which erased a two-score, third-period deficit

EVERETT — A single shift got the Everett Silvertips out of jail Wednesday night.

Chris Langkow and Shane Harper scored 45 seconds apart early in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, and the Tips went on to defeat the Spokane Chiefs 4-3 in overtime at Comcast Arena.

Tyler Maxwell scored the winning goal in OT as Everett (15-7-1-0) moved a point ahead of Spokane (14-8-2-0) for third place in the U.S. Division.

But it was that one third-period shift that saved Everett.

“We needed that,” Langkow said. “We just had a lucky shift, I guess you’d say.”

Everett fell behind 3-1 after Stefan Ulmer’s power-play goal 4 minutes, 16 seconds into the third period gave Spokane a commanding two-goal lead.

However, inspired by Harper, the Tips struck like lightning to tie it back up. First, at 6:19, Harper stole the puck in the right corner and whipped it in front to a wide-open Langkow. Langkow delayed, then roofed a shot over Spokane goaltender James Reid’s shoulder to make it a one-goal game.

The same line remained on the ice for the ensuing faceoff, and it scored again at 7:05. A nice outlet feed from Rasmus Rissanen gave Harper a glimmer of daylight while streaking into the offensive zone down the right. Harper fired and beat Reid to his stick side, tying it up.

Everett then won it 2:02 into overtime. Chris de la Lande freed himself for a shot, and although Reid made the save, Maxwell was there to jam home the rebound.

Harper finished with two goals and Kent Simpson made 34 saves in net for the Tips, who garnered the full points despite not producing their best effort. Everett also struggled on special teams, going 0-for-5 on the power play and allowing the Chiefs to go 2-for-3.

“I think coming into our own building we have to be better than that,” Langkow said. “But we were able to come away with one. We were good at times, but at others we weren’t ourselves. We had too many turnovers and we didn’t have a lot of energy, which we should have playing at home.”

Tyler Johnson and Steve Kuhn scored the other goals for Spokane. Reid finished with 38 saves.

Both teams were missing key players to Team WHL for the Canada-Russia Super Series. Everett played without center Byron Froese while the Chiefs were without left wing Levko Koper and defenseman Jared Cowen.

Everett did get one player back as defenseman Ryan Murray returned from injury. He missed the previous 14 games because of a broken thumb.

Meanwhile, former Everett star Kyle Beach had a quiet game in his first return to Comcast Arena since being traded to Spokane. Beach went scoreless and penalty-less, and spent much of the third period glued to the bench.

Everett had several good scoring chances in close in the first period, the best coming when Harper’s shot rung off the inside of the post on the power play.

However, it was Spokane that took a 1-0 lead in the first. Johnson wound up and shot from the top of the left circle, and the puck took a deflection and went in off the far post at 13:05. The Chiefs could have doubled their lead in the final minute of the period, but Mitch Wahl’s shot on a two-on-one feed from Beach hit the post.

Everett tied it 21 seconds into the second period. Murray’s shot from the point was blocked in front, but it rebounded right to Harper in the high slot, and he picked out the top corner to make it 1-1.

However, the Chiefs had the better of the play in the period, and Spokane regained the lead at 8:37. Simpson spilled Garrett Leedahl’s shot from the point, and when the Tips couldn’t clear, Kuhn put in the rebound to make it 2-1.

Spokane appeared to grab control of the game by scoring 4:16 into the third period to take a 3-1 lead, Ulmer’s shot from the point on the power play beating Simpson clean.

McDermott reassigned

Everett made a roster move Wednesday, reassigning defenseman Drew McDermott to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The 18-year-old McDermott appeared in 11 games for the Tips this season, registering three assists. Last season as a rookie he had a goal and two assists in 53 games. The move leaves Everett with 23 players on the roster: 14 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.
